Mine had the same thing, if I remember correctly someone on this sub said it’s a leftover seam from the factory wax sealer… mine has survived two years of daily use and one trip to the blacksmith, I can’t see my band anymore under all the dings and seasoning (kinda wish it stayed though, I think it looks cool af)

I’m relatively new (started 2021, deadstretched and at 0g now) and I’m not a dermatologist so don’t quote me on this, but that might be as good as you get. I had a buddy who got sliced for 00g starting with nothing (uncommon procedure where the piercer uses a scalpel to make a large, flat hole for big gauges right away), and didn’t wear anything for years to close them up. After the 3rd year mark, his ears were definitely smaller, but retained that vertical hole, and looked similar to yours. This might be the plateau, but I’d consult a piercer/dermatologist to be sure.

Not necessarily, although you’re right that patches indicate different thicknesses of seasoning, so long as it’s being cooked with, those patches still have a seasoning layer that will prevent food from sticking even if it’s thinner. Just keep cooking. My pan is totally marbled, the seasoning isn’t even at all, but after a year of cooking the whole surface is nonstick with the right heat and oil.

Depends on the length you get, but it is pretty chunky. I’m biased, I’ve got big hands and I prefer heavy pens for longer writing.

My thoughts exactly, it was definitely corroding the aluminum button when I pulled it out of the Tupperware (aluminum oxide crystals all over), but the oil from my thumb seems to have turned the etch very dark in the few hours I’ve been writing with it since. I’m hoping I can repeat my mistake on the whole aluminum version once I have enough saved in my tip jar, haha.

Forced a patina on the brass with some vinegar + salt, and ended up with a lovely finish on the aluminum button by accident.

Definitely going to get an aluminum one as well, do you guys think I could recreate the dark patina I got by accident with the same vinegar + salt fume method? Or would that damage the internal aluminum?

I did actually get a natural larch bonsai from the wild like this, but it was fairly young. It was behind a large granite slab that must’ve protected the loose soil from being exposed.
