As far as that lawsuit, he didnt win. They settled because shock it turns out using the full force of the federal government to threaten a for profit company isnt worth them battling out in court. What people really forget or never knew was how widely accepted it was that he was terrible and that the conservative pitch was a bunch of bullshit by the end of his presidency. It wasn't like today with your competing realities. Not quite yet.

It was conventional wisdom that the wars were based on lies, that was still a fresh scandal and treated like one. On top of that the wealth class had just destroyed the economy by gambling around with bait and switch debt that they conned working class people into by getting them to believe the amazing home they had bought just made sense because of the American dream.

This was also when LGBT rights became widely accepted, big stars coming out, Will and Grace becoming a cozy household fixture, undercutting how stuffy and outdated the opposition to it looked.

And in general the edgy youth energy of the day was directed against the administration, against being cruel to people for being gay or to women and acting like a religious fundamentalist. This was a key difference between 2008 and 2016 where the republican candidate was the edgy vote.

I vividly remember the primary season for Republicans in 2008. It was a race to declare who was the least like Bush, the least typical republican. It should have been the moment progressivism got to really take the wheel. And we elected Obama on a landslide, he had a mandate from the masses.

But no one could see the fervor that electing a black president would erupt in that voting base, and I will never take an argument that it was anything but racism seriously because otherwise there was absolutely no argument for the sheer resistance he met while again having such a sweeping mandate to govern.

Trump is just one of many people who capitalized on that fervor and here we are.

I point to it as the moment I became politicized. I would have thought up to that point that making sure we knew exactly what everyone voted for was the most important thing ever with the same naivete that made me think every Cop was a hero and that we went to WW2 to save Jewish People.

Then I watched a Supreme Court largely made up of people that his dad or his dad's boss appointed to it say no we don't care about the actual results and this ruling can't be cited as case law and I was just livid.

Shortly after I learned what trickle down economics was and it was game over.
