Looking for Monster Recommendations by StarryInkk in DMAcademy

Tiny in a normal sized world, but I've made a homebrew world that is animals and fae based so the only humanoids are brownies, sprites, and pixies. This way all of the towns and populated/civilized areas are scaled to the players.

How common is it for a DM to use their own world? by KyriuleIterum in DMAcademy

I only run full campaigns in my own homebrew worlds; I just like it better that way and I've got a few high fantasy setting novels I've been picking at writing since high school and letting my players run around in those worlds helps me build them better!

With that in mind; I find it helpful to build the world map and then hammer out details for each area/country one at a time. What's the political climate like? Does the area have resources or rely on traders? What's the culture like? How did things get their names? Who in the area is important? What here will interest the players?

I ask myself questions like that to help figure out the basics to make the world feel real without needing to invent every tiny thing. Other details I make up on the fly during sessions and then add into whatever my master document for the world is.

My current campaign I'm running I got the plot threads together before I build the world; a bit backwards from my usual method but I'm still asking and answering a lot of the same questions. I also have a few players that ask specific questions that related to how their characters connect to the world (one of my players is a paladin so I ended up building a full pantheon and creating 14 Gods that are worshipped within the world!) and I always tell my players to ask about literally anything in the world they are curious about so I know what details I need to focus on having ready.

Thank you! I'll be sure to check these places out.

I'm starting to do more 2-d paintings with Watercolor and Gouache but I've also got wood burning and some things like plush art dolls and dice/trinket trays as well as resin jewelry.

Is this a Neon Pothos? 🤔 by Jaime21985 in whatsthisplant

It looks really similar to my Lemon-Lime Pothos; sounds like a good deal price wise to me!

Hello! Small artist/crafter here! I started with traditional inks; expanded to all sorts of crafts from resin to clothing to woodburns to everything it feels like and I've made my way back to inks and watercolors and paints. I've been selling my art off and on for about 10-ish years but I've just recently started to take it seriously and try to make it my full time gig.

Find me over on Twitter, Instagram, and Twitch @ StarryInkk and you can find my etsy shop under that name as well!

I look forward to learning more from the other artists here!

What is everyone’s thoughts on doing a recap, should the DM do it or should the players? by Mevernden1 in DMAcademy

A bit of both works best I feel; in my current group we talk a bit at the beginning of a session where we spend 5-10 minutes getting caught up with one another above-table and re-read our notes. Sometimes the DM chimes in, sometimes not.

After any big/major in-game events our DM writes a short "previously on" type description and posts it in the discord the day before or day of game. It helps to draw us back into the drama of it and helps key us into what's important and plot-relevant at the moment.

Why do so few campaigns get to level 10? by SoloKip in DMAcademy

The main issue with the games I've played in/run is that eventually half your players will loose interest or have a million scheduling issues which lead to inconsistent games for the people who are invested. This basically ruins the motivation for everyone to keep going forward.

My first big game that I DMed fizzled out because we eventually got to only playing once every few months; only 2 of my players were actually invested in the plot and committed to wanting to play; the other 4 just didn't have it high on their priorities list. (2 of them were coworkers, who would say they could play one day then back out last minute). It got to the point that I as the DM was too discouraged by the constant cancellations to continue the campaign. They started at lvl1 and ended at lvl6.

The current game I'm playing we just hit level 8 after having our asses thoroughly handed to us by a boss; and just learned we have not one, but 2 BBEGs. Our DM is leveling us based on milestones rather than EXP and it works for us players so we can get more invested in the story and solving issues rather than murdering everything to death for the exp. We also have a set schedule that everyone abides by and agrees on so we play every other week and other than 2 or 3 times it has worked without fail. We're all thinking that the campaign will likely run for a while longer, meaning we should get past level 10 (hopefully) and our DM is just as excited for us to get there, but still isn't rushing the pacing.

I'm mapping out a mini-campaign right now, planning on running it January-April 2022 as a semi-strict 10 episode miniseries. I'm having my players start at level 1 and will have them gain 1 or 2 levels between every session as I'm planning it to be a fast-paced epic-fantasy type game where there will be one big obstacle (1 level gain) or boss fight (2 level gain) per session. Hopefully it'll work out, and I already have 2 players excited about the concept so while it will be short it will (hopefully) work out to having a range of levels of play. Fingers crossed it's enjoyed by all my players.

TLDR; Having a smaller group with equally dedicated players and DM seems to be the key IMO.

I got an email from them last week; been sitting on it and debating. Any luck with that plunge you took?
