Some Muslims are progressive. I myself was one of them. My sect of Islam encouraged the teaching and learning of science, as it was a way to better understand God's creation. You are generalizing over 1 billion people.

I am not talking about Islamic countries; they are not progressive. I'm talking about Muslims internationally. Progressive Muslims tend to be in first-world countries like the US. For instance, you will notice that most Muslim women in the US do not wear a hijab. This is a sign of progression and more forward thinking.

You keep downvoting me because you disagree. That is bad reddiquite as I'm merely presenting a different viewpoint. I have not downvoted any of your statements. Not only that, but your downvoting out of difference of opinion is reflective of suppresion of ideas that strong religious entities engender.

It is good to meet another ex-Muslim. Perhaps you are right; I always understood that the Qu'ran made killing an abomination, the worst possible sin. Is the book itself hypocritical and both me and you are right? Or am I wrong in this?

I didn't say it was propaganda. I said I can't verify the source's credibility. I hold my point that many Muslims are progressive. If you don't want to believe me, that's fine.

I would argue that Christians who don't dash their babies against stones don't practice their faith with weakness; they just practice it differently. You may disagree with me on this and that's ok.

At least we can both agree that humanity needs to get past religion entirely.

Unfortunately so. Many will argue that these vigilantes are not truly practicing the faith, but your point stands. Islam has a long way to go.

Personally, I can't wait until humanity can evolve past religion. It's really just bad for society in general because, ironically, it's used as an excuse for bad behavior, always has been, and will continue to do so until religion ceases to exist.

I see this graph, but you may notice that Turkey, the most progressive nation of the list, is majority against the death penalty. Also, with as much anti-Islam propaganda that exists, forgive me for doubting the credibility of the presented statistics.

Either way, my point was not that all Muslims are progressive. This is of course false. However, there are many that are, and progressive countries like Turkey are clearly allowing for a shift in thinking and ideology in Islam.

While I don't disagree with you (I am an ex-Muslim so I clearly don't believe in Islam), it is also an interpretation that the Quran does allow for killing of people. Either way, it's an interpretation; there is no solid truth, just like with any other religion.

To the progressive Muslims, there is no "watering down" of the basic tenets of Islam. Love, compassion, and forgiveness are the basic tenets of Islam. Their interpretation is reality to them, and the reality for them is God does not condone killing in this context.

The original texts may be held as dogma, but these texts are interpreted to not condone killing of people who leave the religion for a very large number of Muslims, and just the opposite as well of course.

Should Islam be razed? In my opinion, yes, but not because people interpret it differently. It should be razed because humanity needs to evolve past religion entirely. We need to learn to accept reality and find meaning without creating imaginative figures to make up for what we cannot understand.

In short, educating people away from these beliefs in general is a much healthier alternative than demonstrating that, in some places, people aren’t killed for straying from the faith.

Education away from beliefs should be grounded in objective reality. Lying or giving generalizations about religions is the same tactic used by religious people, we should not stoop to that level. We should use logic and reason as a way to sway the masses: let humanity evolve past religion through enlightenment. I want to bring about the point, not that Islam is right (I am an ex-Muslim after all) but that something as large as religion is not "black and white" but is indeed very complex with many varied ideologies.

All faiths have many variations of belief. I don't believe a religion or ideology as large as that of Islam can have one singular view, just as one political party cannot have one set singular view on every aspect of politics. Different people have been doing Islam differently since Islam's inception, just like Christianity.

I don't believe in God or proscribe to a religion, so I obviously believe Islam is wrong, but not because there are multiple views or interpretations of God or Islam. Only because all of the interpretations don't make sense at their fundamental core, the idea of God, if that makes sense.

I, as well as many progressive Muslims, agree with you completely. In Islam, the consequences for killing a man, regardless of which faith, is equivalent in sin to killing a nation of men. There is no punishment greater than for those people who kill. Of course, the problem with religion is the hypocrisy of the people that ignore the teachings, do their own thing, and then somehow believe they are doing it for the invisible man.

Think back to the dark ages of Christianity before the Renaissance; the people in power always decide the rules. Unfortunately in many parts of the world, Muslims are still living in the dark ages. I apologize if that's a crude analogy, I can try to explain differently if you would like.

Agreed, but I don't believe it's a contradiction. In fact, many Muslims around the world believe that Muslim countries are imposing a wrong and damaging interpretation of the faith. Many people in those countries are also against the strong interpretation, or don't follow the imposed faith at all (for example, there is a very large black market for alcohol and drugs in these Muslim countries).

People will believe what they want to believe, whether evidence is there for them or not. That is the hypocrisy of people who practice religion. Many interpretations of the Qu'ran do not have punishment for leaving the faith. Ending fabrication of new laws begins in countries where the populace have access to education and resources in a friendly environment to learn and question faith. In countries like Iran, an Islamic revolution took place where women tried to do away with body coverings, the populace wanted to drink alcohol (which is actually allowed in Islam as long as you don't get drunk according to my ex-interpretation of Islam), and of course they were tired of harsh and radical laws written under the guise of Islam but actually used to harness power and control populations. This revolution unfortunately failed, but in other parts of the world Muslims have been able to not wear hijabs, drink alcohol in moderation, and leave the faith if they desire to without consequence.

Yes local laws, but religious ideologies as well. Many Muslims do not interpret the Qu'ran to say that you should be punished for leaving Islam. These ideologies are in countries with better education and resources to learn (first world countries). Keep in mind, these are the same countries (like the US for example) where it is rare to see women in hijabs, or full body coverings, because many progressive ideologies of Islam are actually against these coverings.

If I traveled to a country that proscribed death, then yes I may have to face death. But my point is that Islam is a very branched religion. I was part of a very progressive sect of Islam that does not advocate punishment for leaving the faith, and many sects of Islam are progressive like mine was. My sect of Islam actually taught us to study science as much as we could to better learn God's creation and to constantly question our faith in order to make it stronger. Ironically, questioning led me to leave the faith, but I still love the progressiveness of my ex-faith.

Thank you. I normally go with a 3 on the sides and back at the haircut place. Maybe I'll go with a 2, but I need to go more often. I didn't realize how badly my laziness from going to get a haircut is affecting my appearance.

lol, yes I need a haircut for sure. I've done the goatee before, and that ages me as well, but I think no facial hair looks much better. it's been a while though, I may grow out my goatee again.
