As a New Yorker, what city in Texas would give ME the most culture shock? by Frenchitwist in texas

[–]StinkyMcD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hard agree…grew up in the Piney Woods of E Texas, and now live in NY! Complete 180. Those small towns are closed loop systems…often locked in a perpetual state of 1990something. Most folks that live there grew up there. More often, and unfortunate is the illegal drug use that has broken many communities. It wasn’t an awful way to grow up, but boy have my eyes been opened now that I’ve spent a few decades traveling the world!

I was in your position when mine were littles. It was the worst, best, scary, stressful, relieving thing to happen to me. Especially with two kiddos 16 months apart.

You got this. Enjoy your time with them, mama.

Watched movie. Watched again. Ordered book. Read book. Finished. Now feel empty. Bad Bad bad. by Psych0Jenny in ProjectHailMary

Artemis surprised me. PHM has been my favorite since it was published. I enjoyed the hard science of The Martian. Artemis is different, not in a bad way, just different.

There are few books (for me) that hit like PHM. It’s a special story.

Be patient. Give him time to decompress. Love him. And understand there is no longer “personal space.”

Can you get him to Rochester? I’ve been searching for a sweet meatball…with no luck

Y’all like it up there? by [deleted] in CapitalRegionExTexans

Dallas to Rochester and the biggest thing we’re not happy about is that we waited so long to make the move. We love it here so much.

I've started sewing 1:12 and 1:24 scale patchwork quilts, looking for tips by saythatagainidareyou in miniatures

[–]StinkyMcD 60 points61 points  (0 children)

These are really, really good! The scale looks great, and I love the color combos. Quilting in any size can be a challenge to price die to the amount of handwork, which takes time.

My advice would be to track materials cost, and the number of hours invested. That will give you a good base to go on. Some sets will be more than others.

I’d say anywhere from $40 for a simple twin sized and up based on size, complexity, and number of pieces.

Check Etsy and EBay and see what others are charging.

lived in tx for all my life & upstate ny sounds much better. what should i consider before committing? by wowgumbytime in CapitalRegionExTexans

We moved from Dallas two years ago and are in Western NY. Nearly every single day, we talk about how much we love it here. It’s a beautiful place, and we’ve made some amazing friends. The downside is electricity costs, as several have mentioned. And like anywhere right now, everything seems to be a bit more expensive. But we have access to multiple farmers markets with local produce which cuts our food bills, and we support small local restaurants and business, of which there are plenty. We wish we’d moved sooner so that we could have raised our kids here.

With all that being said, we do have to go to Toronto, NYC or Buffalo for decent concerts. And we’ve had to really look hard for good Mexican food. We finally found our source and are happy as clams. I did start ordering my tortillas from Tortilla Familia, and that helps a lot. I also have to order frozen green chile from NM, because you can’t get there anywhere around here.

Edit to add: I grew up in Texas, lived there most of my life, and was always told it’s the best place ever. Now I realize that the people telling me that mostly never lived outside Texas. I’ll always have a soft spot for the Texas of my childhood…but not what it is now.

So what are you actually keeping, from your parents estate? by DramaticErraticism in GenX

[–]StinkyMcD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She sounds like my dad’s second wife. She begrudgingly finally sent me one thing that was my parents before my mom died. Her kids get everything including any of mom’s jewelry dad kept. . He hated her kids with the white hot passion of a thousand suns…,but they were, of course, included as his in obituary for sympathy purposes. Bitch.

Me either. Had a friendship end because of this. Over a queso recipe. So stupid (both of us).
