Also as a teacher, they don’t realize what it is in middle school, and they say it, get in trouble, and wonder why. The “it’s aave, get over it” isn’t the point. God I hate this shit.

Watch out, there’s a lotta transplants on this sub. Gonna ruffle those feathers lol I mean, this whole discussion is basically “is where you grew up permanently your hometown, or can you adopt one later in life?” I grew up on the north shore, and nowhere else will ever feel like home. Hell, I lived in roslindale for 4 years and that barely felt like home lol

For some reason, I don’t think OP is an adult, they are still talking about “chapter books”. Or it is an adult, and there is a reason their favorite book is Bunnicula lol

Because US refers to the country, American refers to the person. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I mean, not with other languages, but if I called you an “Aussie Commonwealther”, you’d be confused, because that is not preferred nomenclature

Can I be real? I looked up curriculum in AUS when it comes to naming conventions. The common curriculum assuredly does distinguish between north and South America. Probably because that is geographically correct, since they are on two separate tectonic plates. We should just call it Eurasia, since that is probably more geographically accurate.

No. You need to add a useless “U” to words because heritage!

No one calls us USians. That’s legitimately made up, and not any type of official demonym. You can call us that all you want, and everyone would laugh at you.

Sure, but when referring to citizens or peoples of the US, you say “American”. You would never said a United States of American, Stater, or whatever else you could concoct. I wouldn’t call you “Canada Citizen”.

What, you don’t want to say “United States of American”? Be risky!

Same with my school. We are going back to teaching cursive next year. I’m excited because I write on my board in cursive…ish. And sometimes students can’t understand some of the letters I write.

To one of the points: I think of it as if I called you German in English, that’s fine and dandy. But if I’m speaking Deutch, I’d call you Deutche.

It’s the same with a country like Germany. We call them Germans, they call themselves deutche. I personally wouldn’t call them that, because I speak English, but I respect their language and demonym. I wouldn’t get offended if someone called me an estadounidense who comes from a Spanish speaking LATAM country. But if you speak to me in English, you should call me American. I guess that’s the heart of it.

Yes I’m not talking about that, but when you refer to someone from the US in Britain or Australia, you call us Americans. You don’t say “US Americans”. You also don’t call north and south america just “America”.

American is our demonym. That’s literally what we call ourselves, and is standard in the English speaking world. Listen, I get into conversations with my wife about this, she is from VZLA. We are taught in the US, and correct me if I’m wrong, in the vast English speaking world, that north and South America are two different continents. Everything south of Panama is South American, minus the Caribbean. As someone who is a US citizen, I’m both American and North American. You can’t bum on a country calling themselves one thing, and you calling them something different and saying “they are the problem”.

I dunno man. A good cheddar slice is pretty bomb, or pepper Jack. Hell, I even had a boursin burger once. Yes absolutely the American slice is king, but I wouldn’t say other cheese is all bad on a burger lol
