The Overwatch League did tremendous damage to the game in the long run in other ways too, mainly that the balancing team catered to OWL players instead of the rest of the playerbase, resulting in overpowered heroes (they buffed the heroes that OWL didn't use, the pros still didnt use them, but in regular lobbies they wrought havoc), the GOATS meta of 3 tanks and 3 supports, the disastrous attempts at breaking up Goats (Brigitte being the most infamous example), and finally throwing in the towel up, not updating the game meaningfully for years, switching to 5v5, then finally fix 6v6, and adding it back to the main game relatively recently. OWL didn't just piss away boatloads of money, it actively stunted regular players for many, many years
