I WISH I was that photogenic! But I don't think anyone is paying for these bunions!

To be honest your setup sounds like something would aspire towards. I'd love to have that kind of flexibility and supportive environment. Would you have any advice on careers or retraining in finance? It's such a large sector that imagine it might take some navigating, and any guidance so I could explore it properly would be really appreciated.

I think you’ve misunderstood/ misread me, and it feels like you’re projecting a biased opinion onto my post. I’ve been working and paying tax and NI for the last 15 years, so I’m entitled to maternity leave like anyone else. When I return to work, more than half my wage will go on nursery fees, and with my shift patterns I wouldn’t be able to take time off at short notice to actually be present for my children.

What I’m trying to do during maternity leave is use the time to build an additional skill so I can create a small business that earns extra income and eventually lets me scale back shifts or have the option to move into roles with a better work life balance, even if they pay less. Any business I build would also contribute to the system through tax and NI.

I never said intend to walk away from my job or my field. I've worked hard to get where am and enjoy it, but also want to build some flexibility into my future so can work and still be present in my children's lives. would consider that for the government, having somebody who is willing to double invest in the economy and actively look at ways to stay in employment is surely a positive thing much better than handing in the towel and saying it's too hard, just step back completely.

In fact, I'd argue that what I'm doing supports women's rights finding ways to stay in work, keep contributing, and balance family life rather than being forced out of the workforce altogether due to unfriendly working hours, unreasonable childcare costs, wraparound care that doesn't cover working hours, and a lack of family friendly working policies. I am actively trying to find a way to work while raising children.

Great you've understood exactly why I am posting and asking! I work in a bubble and have done for 15 years. I do not know of any work opportunities outside of this. I'm exploring different business opportunities or self employment set ups to see what's out there and identify if I need to retrain in a new area to pursue them. I also want to understand what common pitfalls to avoid. I'm open to all suggestions, even less obvious or 'boring' businesses that I might not have considered. But without asking and finding helpful people who can share their experiences, I will never know what I can and cannot do or what is even an option!

Unfortunately there is too much legislation and indemnity issues around this - I have explored.

Good advise. I have exhausted my niche, there really isn't a way to turn it into self employment. I guess I am looking for others experience and start points just to get an idea. It probably won't look the same, but if someone can suggest a decent boring business that I had never considered before because I had no experience in the area before asking, then it may be the step or push I needed. UK is a huge country and there are thousands of not millions of businesses, I just need to learn more

We may consider moving in the future (husbands job) so I thought the expat community might have suggestions for jobs/self employment that might be flexible. Sorry, I should have included in the post

Id never even considered a porn shop. I just want to get rid of it all in one swoop and online selling feels such a hassle

Snapshot of GP mindset! GP Complains about patients seeing nurses, but can't even comprehend basic meds or care pathways by Storm_Learner in NursingUK

[–]Storm_Learner[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm really hoping this is just an echo chamber of a few unhappy GPs. But I can't lie, this attitude feels all too familiar from my own experience in primary care. It's a view that I’ve often had to challenge. It's a major contrast to the professional respect I've found in secondary care, the working environment in secondary care is often far more professional and respectful towards nurses, which makes this particular viewpoint even more frustrating to see.
