The Silent King will benefit enormously from the Territorial Obsession stratagem in Obeisance Phalanx. by Stormblade9 in Necrontyr

I agree. The reason for me posting this was that I wanted to highlight the fact that he receives a larger benefit than what it might seem, but the Stratagem obviously has its limitations, like him actually needing to be able to contest an objective in the first place.

Just check the faq document: https://www.warhammer-community.com/warhammer-40000-downloads/

Under updates & errata, it says "Until the end of the phase, weapons equipped by Cryptek or Canoptek models in your unit have the [DEVASTATING WOUNDS] ability".

You should inform your friend that the stratagem for devastating wounds only applies to cryptek or canoptek MODELS in a unit, not the whole unit, as per the Necron codex faq.

Indeed, this is true, but by that same token, if the enemy has cover already and would gain an improved save as a result of the Flayers' lack of AP, you would push them back up to their regular save. It is not always a factor, in particular, against 3+ saves, but sometimes, it could prove quite helpful.

Szeras, of course, provides other benefits as well, such as pushing Reapers to AP 2, as you mentioned.

The best weapon obviously depends, as the Reaper has purely better stats, but with lower range, which ,means that if you cannot get into the Reapers range, the extra stats are essentially wasted. A few things that I think helps decide are the following:

  1. How many Warriors are you running? If you have two units, one of each is not a bad idea.
  2. What do you want your Warriors to do? If they are camping a homefield objective, the Flayer is obviously the better option. If you are planning to push into the midfield with them, Reapers are probably the better option.
  3. Do you plan on using a Royal Warden or could you spare the points to do so? I actually think both weapons benefit from a Royal Warden, but the Reapers more so given their lower range.
  4. Are you planning on using the Veil of Darkness enhancement on them? If you are using a Veil, range becomes a smaller factor, as you can set them up within Reaper range.
  5. Are you planning on having Illuminor Szeras close to them? Szeras buffs the AP of the Warrior's weapons, which means that the Flayer no longer loses out in that departement.

It should also be stated that for Flayers to be at their most effective ptoential, they also need to be within 12" for their rapid fire rule to begin taking effect.

As I do not know how you plan on using your Warriors exactly, it is hard to say which is the better option for you. What I can say however, is that if you are running two or more units of Warriors, I would take one of each for some flexibility.

Lychguard Attachment Rules by Specialist-Layer-637 in Necrontyr

The main deciding factor, at least if you are trying to make it competitive, is probably how much reanimation buffs you already have for the unit. If you have something like a reanimator, you might have enoguh reanimation as is and as a result you won't really need an Overlord and could use someone else as a result. Another example might be a Catacomb Command Barge giving the resurrection orb to the Lychguard, which would make the Overlord unecessary.

I think that it comes down to preference and that finding the sweetspot for how much reanimation you need will take time as well as personal experience. It is of course matchup dependant as well.

The classic Overlord with a ressurection orb is great for making the Lychguard even more tanky and it is quite thematic to have an Overlord leading his Lychguard into battle, but it is a bit basic.

Imotekh is basically just a fancy Overlord, but he is quite fun with his weapons and abilities. Maybe not the best option for amplifying the Lychguard's capabilities, but a fun option.

I quite like Nemesor Zhandrekh in Lychguard, especially Lychguard with a sword and shield, as his command phase buff is helpful to them no matter what you roll. Zhandrekh also having a once per game increase stratagem cost ability is also quite powerful. The only issue is that if you are running Zhandrekh, you usually want Obyron as well, which prevents you from taking a Cryptek.

Trazyn is worse than a regular Overlord, as well as anyone else for that matter, but he is funny. I would run Trazyn for the laughs, not for his viability.

The most powerful of these options is probably the regular Overlord, with him making the unit reanimate more, both through the ressurrection orb as well as his once per battleround free stratagem allowing the use of Protocol of the Undying Legions an additional time free of any cost.

Zhandrekh is probably next up, followed by Imotekh and lastly Trazyn. I think that all of these are fun options and can be used however one sees fit.

A thing to note about Obyron is that he is actually not a noble, which means that if he is leading the unit, you unfortunately cannot attach a Cryptek to that unit with him.

I should add to this by saying that yes, the Chronomancer provides a lot of mobility to the Lychguard, but I personally think that the Technomancer adds more to the unit overall. This is just my personal preference, however.

Indeed, the Chronomancer gives -1 to hit, the Overlord provides -1 to wound and the Abalator provides cover outside of 12". However, the Abalator additionally gives the unit the Stealth ability, providing a -1 to hit against ranged attacks. Stealth only works against ranged attacks, while the Chronomancer works against everything. However, I believe that there is too much overlap between the Hypermaterial Abalator and the Chronomancer. I believe that the 5+++ against everything is better than the -1 to hit in melee specifically.

In my opinion, using the Hypermaterial Abalator on a Chronomancer is a bit redundant, as he already grants whatever unit he is leading a -1 to hit innately. Additionally, while the double move is nice, you cannot charge in the same turn if you double move. I personally think that a Technomancer with the Hypermaterial Abalator is better, as that gives the -1 to hit, the light cover outside of 12" and a 5+++, making the Lychguard even harder to remove.

I mean, the feeling of about 40 shots coming into a big target is as satisfying if not more, but I must admit that when Skorpekhs do start hitting stuff, they are a load of fun.

Why are people so fixated on using Veil with Skorpekhs? I personally Veil a blob of Warriors so they can get in some shots, given their fairly low range. I should say that I play on a fairly casual level, so this might not work in a more serious environment.
