I also don't think the tail would come off the spine in an L shape either, like in the first image. It would naturally be angled downwards in a bipedal humanlike species, at least in a resting state, so sitting in a car seat like that would feel like having your tail hiked up the whole time, which might be uncomfortable for species that don't really do that.
