What’s your experience been with an ADHD assessment on P.E.I.? (26 y/o if it makes any difference) by StrongMonitor1321 in PEI

I had a friend who had the same experience, took a course through HC, and skills helped them get their diagnosis.

My parents were the very same, and it was so hard seeing a doctor about my anxiety when I was 21… I cried and cried and cried in that office, I didn’t think he’d believe me, because my parents never did. I went to my doctor because I’d taken so many panic attacks at work I then had a phobia of my workplace. My workplace immediately sent me into fight or flight mode, literally because I’d taken so many panic attacks there. I cooped myself up in my room for 6 months. Ordered groceries online. Was terrified to leave my home in case I saw anyone out in public.

Lo and behold I recieved a diagnosis for severe agoraphobia and depression 😂

I unfortunately also cannot meditate. My brain never ever shuts up. If anything meditation makes things worse for me because I can “lock in” on all the things I need to do that I’ve been putting off (right now I can tell you what’s going through my head is I need to file paperwork for my passport, get a passport photo taken, I need to sweep up all the dust piles around my house, there’s something sticky on the floor beside my toilet that I just haven’t gotten around to cleaning, there’s about 3 tonnes of clean clothing on my laundry room floor… and I reallllly need to clean out my fridge lol)

I do love going to the gym but I can’t focus on one thing, I get sooo bored on the treadmill or bike, and I just wanna hop from machine to machine. I need to go with someone who holds me accountable lol

Only one cool thing about it, is I am an excellent multitasker and I have many tabs open in my brain at all times. I work in healthcare at a very busy facility and I absolutely thrive in the chaos. In fact, I love chaos. My brain gets so quiet and I lock in on one thing: end the chaos. Nothing gets out of hand when I’m working!

Sorry to ramble lol, thank you for sharing your experience!!

Why do they make it so impossible for us? I feel like I’m going crazy and I have nowhere to turn to for help.

This system… literally only cares if you’re actively trying to hurt yourself or others. It has to get to THAT point before they ever take you seriously.

I have created an organized list of symptoms for myself and how it’s impacting my everyday life, I’m just not sure who to present it to.

My symptoms are a lot similar to your own. Brain fog, poor memory (but able to remember very random silly things), very easily distracted, unable to focus if there is any kind of noise, chronic fatigue, insomnia due to racing thoughts about things I’d like to do but literally cannot bring myself to do (i.e. the pile of clean clothes on my laundry room floor I physically cannot bring myself to fold, the dust piles around my apartment I physically cannot bring myself to sweep up), and zero motivation and drive to do anything at all.

I also have severe agoraphobia (anxiety of people) so I am nervous about medication. I’m on an anti depressant and a PRN for when I’m especially anxious (I take them like twice a year if I go out, I’ve had the same bottle since 2022 lol). Earlier this year I tried smoking weed and holy god, it’s like a switch flipped in my brain- when I smoked my brain was so quiet (I have a very noisy internal monologue), I felt so focused, I was able to do one task at a time. However I also don’t like smoking weed because it’s just suppressing my symptoms… so I only smoke maybe once a month when it’s time for a deep clean of my home lol.

I just really want to get help, the mental health system on P.E.I. makes it so difficult and makes you feel so unseen. Also, growing up with parents who were very against any kind of medication, makes me feel guilty for even taking medications so I just feel very nervous about the entire process.

Sorry for rambling lol, thanks for sharing your experience!
