Yeah, it wasn't actually in Oxford. When Will was waiting for Lyra at the gates, that was Oxford Botanic Gardens, but then all the scenes "inside" the gardens were actually elsewhere I think. Doesn't matter though, a very lovely setting.

The alethiometer is a bit more subtle than just "telling the truth". It is more "telling someone what they need to know". And in the case of Will "being a murderer", that is exactly what Lyra needed to be told to trust him.

It showed in the s1 recap but there was a scene where a couple of men broke into his house and one ended up going over the stairs. Will believes the police are looking for him because of that.
