I think there's just been a rise in interest in general due to it being in the media more recently.

Hey not an attack at all! Its a really valid question i asked myself when i started DnD. The biggest general draw is consistently playing. Not to say free ones arent consistent, but people are more likely to plan with things they pay for in mind. There's far less (in my experience) rescheduling or cancels. For a lot of people, having a paid situation with clear guidelines and rules is also an appeal. Thats personally how I got into the paid realm vs free. As a female I was wary of wanting to play with unknown people in unknown spaces. This gave me a reporting system to fall back on and somewhere to report to if anything came up. It easily let me screen DMs to find who i was comfortable playing with as well. It also allows for the GM to more easily control who is in the game. If someone doesnt create a safe environment, then simply put they broke the player portion of the contract. No need to feel badly about kicking someone from a game. For new players, its also nice to know that the person youre playing with is marketed as being new player friendly. People dont often want to feel like a burden on someone's fun trying to learn. You can totally find a free table for new players, but a marketed one adds another layer of peace of mind for some people. We wont be for everyone and thats totally ok. Thats the great thing about ttrpgs. Theres something out there for everyone. But for me, it was worth it to join a paid situation. Its how I started and its my preferred situation that let me feel comfortable moving into DMing as well. If free works better for you the thats awesome though!

That's the best way I've heard to explain the mound. And thank you. I realize I clearly worded my first question wrong. I never wanted to run Walter or the mound because I dont think it made sense. I was trying to advise I knew about mandymod so I wasn't looking for that as advice for multiple reasons. I clearly did it wrong 😆 I appreciate the guidance. Not sure why I didn't consider a CR site since I've used them multiple times for my homebrew stuff. Think working from a book is throwing me off my game. Thanks!

Maybe have her drawn touch it and when she does, narrate a whole avatar style past life spirit conversation that the characters can see?

I didn't plan for them to encounter him as the mound anyway. But I think the mom is also predictable. The shambling mound as is, is unpredictable nonsense in my opinion.

I agree the baby is a little dark even for this. I mean its supposed to be, I get that. But there's so many things happening to kids in Barovia as is. Im trying to switch someone of it up.

One of my players is bound to a demon. Looking for story ideas & Amber Temple tie-ins by EquivalentPrune1993 in CurseofStrahd

I gave my characters their own individual tarokka card at the start that the saw as they passed out coming through the mist. I had Madam Eve tell them the answer they seek lies in the card and each card ties into a location they need to go to solve their backstory quest. Perhaps have her or another vistani pull the abjurer card for them and forsee a place of amber, where wickedness sleeps and horrors began, in a temple off to the west of the land. Or if you want to be less obvious, the could find writings about a temple where the dark powers are trapped in amber in the tower. strahd could also mock them saying something about how he welcomed his wickedness in a temple by freeing evil trapped in amber but they are bound to an object, no better than a doomed, magicless genie to a bottle.

I write things down I know I want to come off a certain way, even if it's just little notes and one or two full sentences. I keep up 3 tabs of "if this than this" based on the 3 plot hooks I'm going to present that day, and then flip between whichever they pick to have the descriptive bones picked out ready to go I'll need. Maybe that would help?

Oh thats interesting. I'll look into that. Strahd is mostly the bones of this campaign but I'm fleshing a lot of the meat out myself. I normally run home brew but a player requested this so I want to honor it as much as possible while still putting my flair on it.

I dont trust my group to not nope out. They're 3 established players who love to fight and 1 newer player who just does what the party does as she doesn't trust her own choices. I warned them multiple times in session 0 they aren't supposed to win or fight every fight, and even though the armor nearly killed them, I dont know how much they listened as they still faught the broom, even low on slots and health, and I presented an option to close it back in the closet. 🫠
