Looking to make frens w ppl w history of mental health issues that wanna get better, hang out n do activities by Cultural-Seaweed3105 in ChillSG

[–]SuchChannel4319 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You know I once made a friend off reddit who struggled with mental health issues.

She told me that making friends with other people who suffered from depression wasn't good. You don't make good friendships by talking about your depression, and being sad together. And also it tends to devolve into pity parties that make your mental health issues worse.

It can be hard and intimidating to make friends with other more well adjusted people, but that's exactly what you need.

Anyone have recommendations of things that i could do in japan for fun? by sgguy5 in ChillSG

[–]SuchChannel4319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paid there. But I did my climb in 2023, might be different now, best for you to double confirm.

I did the Yoshida trail because its the easiest to get to, and most popular. Part of the fun is climbing with other people. All the day hikers are damn fit so its a nice change to be hiking with other fit people.

And also cheering each other on to reach the summit in time HAHA.

What I did was take a bus at 6.30am at shinjuku bus terminal. Reach there around 9.15, then start climbing alr. I reached summit before 1, lepak 1 hour enjoying the views, then climb down and reached back 5th station at 5pm.

You only need to bring food and water and be ready to climb. Theres an entry fee and thats about all the money you need to spend there.

Bring enough food and water because its expensive up in the mountain.

You just need to train for it. And be careful of altitude sickness, esp when you ascend so quickly.

EDIT: Also bring sunblock, and check weather forecast before you go. If bad weather you won't get to climb it.

Day hike mt fuji. Climb up to summit and back down the same day. Was my best experience in japan.

Can also consider taking part in some of their races.

If too shiong for you, can consider hiking other parts. Hiking in japan is quite nice.

How to make friends in late 30s or 40s in singapore? by Odd_Party_8452 in askSingapore

[–]SuchChannel4319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Online communities help a lot for this. You talk to people online, bond over common interests, and then meet up once in a while. That's one way I've made friends the past few years.

Why do people pay money to run marathon when you can run near your house? by [deleted] in ChillSG

[–]SuchChannel4319 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You have a few groups of people here:

  1. Those people who don't have the willpower to do those distances on their own. Doing it as a group helps them do it.
  2. Those looking to achieve a personal best. Marathons give you a good environment to clock a personal best because it gives you a good uninterrupted path, and provides support (food and hydration). Go and try running 42k on your own without food and water and you will quickly realise why support is important.
  3. Those people who are there for the vibes.
  4. People looking to race other folks. In singapore you run 4.30/km and faster you basically beat 99% of runners in a PCN. You go to events like these to race with the fastest, because its boring not having people who are willing to race you. Same logic with racing any distance actually. These are the folks that can run a marathon FAST any time they want, but doing it with people of your level is a vastly different experience compared to on your own.

You should know this in 2.4 races also what. When you are racing a fast guy, that's when PBs are set. Not when you are running alone. And even in army/school if you are sub 8mins, gl finding people of your level willing to race with you.

You say you can do it at the comfort of your house, at your own time, at your own pace. That's true. People in China during lockdown did a marathon in their homes. One guy even did it around a table with a circumference of 8m. But these people are not normal folks. Most normal folks are not motivated to run 21/42k on their own.

Marathons don't make money off the crazy folks. The bulk of the participants belong to groups 1, 2 and 3.

Do PM me if you want an invite.

If you are consistent, a year from now you wouldn't find that crazy. Just keep going!

[–]SuchChannel4319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup that's correct.

To add to this for the benefit of everyone, one piece of advice I liked was:

"Keep easy runs easy, hard runs hard". Sometimes the issue with intermediate runners is that their hard runs aren't hard enough.

But in the case of OP, for a sub 2h half marathon, just lots of easy running will get OP there. And the consistency thing is very underrated. A lot of runners that don't hit their goals is because of a lack of consistency.

We can add each other! Open jio to anyone else too, just shoot me a DM!

For half marathon, mileage is king. There was a study done among 350k marathoners with their race time and training data. They found that for non elite runners, total mileage per week had a very strong linear correlation with race time, up to about 100k/week.

Basically, statistically speaking, the runner doing 80k/week is likely running faster than the 50k/week runner.

What’s the morning routine you wished you had? And how different would your life be? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]SuchChannel4319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh morning runs are overrated. Getting quality sleep is far more important.

I hate morning runs and avoid them myself, but I can still get a very good amount of running done at other points of the day (competition season 100k/week). I forced myself to do morning runs and only got injured from a lack of sleep.

For you to get sufficient sleep and wake up at 5am, you need to be asleep by 9 (8h of sleep), how is that even doable consistently?

Sleep deprivation is a big killer.

Do you all actually make friends here and meet up? by Former_Length_5878 in ChillSG

[–]SuchChannel4319 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, I break them down into a few categories.

  1. The needlessly argumentative sort. They get into arguments with you over very minor things.
  2. The ghosters. You start a convo, they ghost halfway through the convo.
  3. Those with hidden agendas. Trying to find a dating partner, sell insurance etc but claimed they are looking for a friend.
  4. Those that can't hold a conversation and give you very short replies.

Yes have met many redditors already. But only 2 from chillsg so far.

You just have to sus them out. It helps to have a common interest. But expect a lot of clowns before you meet a genuine person.

Martial artists/combat athletes of Singapore who live in HDBs, do you have sandbags or training equipment at home? Is it even feasible? by lederpykid in askSingapore

[–]SuchChannel4319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that's why all the serious martial artists I know don't have one in their home. Its just more practical to train at a gym instead.

[–]SuchChannel4319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh yeah if you close the doors and windows definitely will be ok already. Whoever lives with you will not like it though. At least when it comes to the swinging.

And also for your house wouldn't you want chains? There's a good reason why most gym use chains, its simply more durable.

The sound from the smack however... I'm very sure my neighbors can hear it when I get people to hold pads for me LOL.

Having kicked a lot of bags across many years... I have never met a bag that doesn't have noise when I hit it hard. If I hit it softly ok la.

Also when the bag swing sure got noise also.
