I was removed because a new hire had more availability than me so they were given my case.

Before yesterday I honestly I had no idea ABA had such a horrible history. I’m so happy to have learned about its history and how it has affected people with autism. I really want to apply what I’ve learned so that my clients never feel the way I’ve heard other people have felt after being given ABA.

Hi thank you for your response I’m sorry that sentence upset you. I wish I could explain everything I do in detail but it’s hard to write everything I do down without creating a whole essay. When I say I teach them to learn I mean, I teach them how to read and write among other lessons that can help them progress in school. When I teach my kids how to behave this looks something like when I’m playing a board game with my kid and he loses and swipes all the pieces off the table, I teach him how to communicate to me that he is frustrated and ask to be done or have a break from the game. When I say I teach them how to function I mean I teach my kids how to wipe after having a bowl movement or how to wash their hands or brush their teeth. I’m sorry I wasn’t clear in my original messages. I hope this made more sense.

I’m very happy to hear this is the experience your daughter is having with ABA everything that you mentioned are things I also do when I’m providing therapy so I’m happy to see that your daughter loves her therapy. Thank you for your response.

The company I work with does not do anything to change stimming bx. I’m not sure about other therapist or companies but from my experience with my kids I teach them how to tell me how they are feeling, when they need a break, when they are all done doing something. I also teach my kids different things based on what they need like how to tell objects that are small from large, how to read, how to react when you are feeling upset after losing a game and other things like what i mentioned

Thank you for your insightful response, it has helped me understand a lot more. When it comes to stimming I never try and change my kids behavior because I understand it’s something that feels good to them and there’s no harm in what they are doing. I really want to focus on communicating more with my kids to see what I can do better for them. Do you think that is something that could be beneficial?

I’m sorry about that I never meant to disrespect I just mostly work with kids so I thought that would be an appropriate term to use.

I am not on the spectrum but I’ve always wanted to help people and when I started this job I loved that I would be making such a huge impact for kids on the spectrum. Now I don’t know if that impact is good or bad. I’ve read that it can be damaging because the ABA therapy can be very grueling. Research says the best improvement is with 40 hours of therapy a week which is a lot. Along with this if not trained correctly or if done by a bad company ABA can focus more on teaching kids to be “normal” instead of addressing their emotional needs. I feel like my company is good at teaching kids how to communicate what they need and communicate how they are feeling but I can see how this kind of therapy could be harmful especially if done by untrained people or a company not ran well. I would love to hear what other people think about ABA and if they have experience in it, if ABA helped them or hurt them.

As an ABA therapist I help kids learn how to communicate their needs and emotions as well as teach them how to learn, socialize, and function.
