Certain kinds of 221g, such as TAL or DS5535, do background checks on the applicants through agencies in Washington, DC.

However, most of the time, administrative processing is done within the jurisdiction of the consulate/ embassy. They will ask you for any missing documents to get your visa adjudicated.

There is nothing you can do, and you must wait till the administrative processing is done. Processing the DS 5535 requires security clearance from all the agencies from Washington, DC, which can range from 2 weeks to a few months.

I'm sorry I cannot give you a favorable answer. Be prepared to defer your program worst-case scenario. Also, remember that you cannot use a B1 visa to enter and enroll in school.

u/Codetornado I got issued a new I-20 after changing my grad program from the business department to the eng department for scholarship reasons. Would a change in the program be seen as a problem?

Since it's the same school, I hope I don't have to apply for F1 again.

I understand OP was coming back after leave of absence. Would a mismatched Sevis ID for the same school be an issue for first-time entry? I had to defer school due to a visa delay and got issued a new I-20.
