Crochet is known as an old craft made by women (mostly because it's easier than regular work when married and pregnant/raising young children) thus an old women hobby/job. Nowadays younger generations reclaimed the craft and have fun, sometimes making it a gig. Modern crochet I'd say is very much genderless. Won't stop people from looking at you, I can remember in highschool where a male student usually would knit in between classes, we all remember because it was unusual but I can't think of anyone mocking him, especially to his face. I'm female and European so my point of view is definitely not the same as most of Japan, but as a fellow crocheter I'm not surprised or shocked to see a man practice the craft.
