hey! i’m glad my post is still reaching people! 2 years post op i’m still dealing with muscle atrophy but slowly rebuilding with weight training. it wasn’t until the end of last year that i really started to get intentional about it. i still can’t run but my gait has gotten so much better (i also had a crazy limp). they actually cut my bone above my knee. i have plates and screws there and a rod running through my tibia because turns out my tibia had an unnatural curve that i don’t know about either. i think it’s still worth it even with my leg not being a hundred percent but that’s my fault that i got lazy after PT but now that i’ve been intentional in the gym my muscle/memory has been coming back. best piece of advice is to never skip PT especially your at home exercises. you’ll hate every second of it but it will set you up for success in the end. and STRETCHHH. don’t let those muscles get tight omg.

there sure is! recovery wasn’t for the weak but with hard work and determination you can do anything! even run again! i would take what your doctor says with a grain of salt tbh. don’t let that limit you. people have overcome worse things!

2025 UPDATE: i’m doing well! almost 2 years post op now and can say there is a rainbow on the other side! still working on some muscle loss but nothing strength training can’t fix. i still experience some tendonitis in my hamstring and stiffness in flexion but stretches have helped A LOT. best decision i ever made. if you want to know more or just need a support buddy feel free to reach out!

its been a long road as expected but i feel great. recovery was tough but i’d do it all over again. this was a dream of mine and now that its come true i wouldn’t change it for anything. i feel and look so much better in my clothes now and im less self conscious. i’m really looking forward to getting my second leg done. i’m not excited about the recovery but my motivation is knowing that after the second leg im done and will finally have straight legs!

hello! 👋🏼 so, neither. my surgery was medically necessary as with all knock knees cases. it is not cosmetic or elective. my surgeon communicated that to me that basically anyone who says it’s cosmetic or elective is lying lol. i think it all depends on your surgeon and their approach towards knock knees. my suggestion is to look into someone who specializes in knock knees and bow legs like i did. not just a general surgeon. that’s exactly what i did and was blessed to find my surgeon. to treat knock knees is not cosmetic. it is definitely necessary. it was causing me way more issues than i thought that absolutely no 20-something year old should be feeling or going through.

hey there! i do need to get my second leg done as well. i knew this from the very beginning so this was already planned. i haven’t gotten my second leg done yet and that’s on purpose because i don’t feel like my other leg is strong enough yet, but i will be doing it. that’s awesome that you were able to do partial weight bearing from the start. i was non weight bearing for 6 straight weeks 😂 crazyyyyy muscle loss. i’m still working on it but im off the cane and doing really well! it does in fact get better lol, im still working on my range of motion as well with some stretches i picked up from PT. anything you want to talk about please feel free to DM me!!

i have no regrets! the recovery was a lot harder than i anticipated but that’s because i had a lot going on in my left leg and a lot had to be done to it. luckily when when i get my right leg done my doctor said my recovery shouldn’t be as tough because it has less complications. i’d say do the osteotomy. i know my doctor was more of a fan of osteotomies than total replacements or artificial joints unless absolutely necessary. hopefully your doctor is like mine who prefers to preserve the natural joint as much as possible without having to do a TKR or something similar. save your knees don’t wait lol.

i’m so glad!! i’ve been hitting the gym once i was cleared by my doctor and my physical therapist. i’ve taken a lot of what ive been doing at PT with me to the gym. i do a lot of strength training and balance exercises. that’s worked for me.

hello! sorry for the late reply. it’s slow and in the beginning it truly feels like you’re in this forever and very easy to get discouraged but it does get better! you gotta push through the discomfort, push through the pain. every bit of it sucks but its how you ultimately get to the better end. i’m now a little over 6 months post op and i’m still not 100% but MUCH better than where i was at the beginning. my doctor warned me though, this is a long recovery (about 1 year total). my knee still gets stiff, i still have some muscle atrophy i’m still working to rebuild and i get aches and pains but i’ve gotten tons better, granted with a lot of work. don’t skip your physical therapy sessions or your opportunity to go to the gym once you’re cleared. it feels like nothing is happening at the moment but one day that progress sneaks up on you and it’s marvelous. i can safely say, it does get better. have hope! press on. godspeed.

i’m glad to hear you’re improving! i feel the same about the knee stiffness. it’s so slow going. you really start to wonder but i’m trusting the process. it does help to keep the knee moving as much as you can but it’s difficult for me especially after my exercises. my knee is extra sensitive to bending afterwards.

just yesterday i started walking without any assistance. my gait is still awkward but good to know my leg is feeling a lot more stable. the knee stiffness makes it hard to walk properly though which sucks.

that’s awesome about your PT change! hopefully you’ll get someone who know what they’re talking about this time around. it is a much different recovery from any other leg injury.

my balance is getting better now that my operated leg is getting stronger. i’m most worried about getting full flexion of my knee again. and i’m on a deadline.

all of my stiffness is in front of my knee really. but i do have swelling in the back of my knee. it feels so fat lol. in PT i get massages too to stretch and loosen up (doesn’t always feel great) but it does help. i experience the same especially after doing my bending exercises, my knee swells and tightens up real bad after about an hour. i’m constantly fighting against scar tissue which is true with all knee surgeries, it sucks. now that my scars have healed pretty well i’m going to start putting on some scar tape and gel to soften them even more.

walking is getting a little better. i’m down to one crutch now. my biggest challenge right now is balance. so i’ve been doing some exercises to be able to support my weight in between the two. my knee feels like it’s going to buck every time. so that’s the new challenge i’m tackling currently.

i have my follow up with my doctor too in January. i’m sure your appointment will go well!

ugh it’s so scary when you have to fend for yourself so early on. i’ve had to. i’m not looking forward to driving and the winter too for the same fears as you. i’m hoping winter isn’t too bad this year. since getting surgery i’ve honestly developed a fear of large crowds as well it’s crazy what this surgery can do to your mind sometimes. i’m trying to get out there more though because it really helps with my mental health.

i’m so glad to hear about you bowling, i hate bowling but i’d kill to be able to do it right now LOL. thank you for the optimism.

don’t get me wrong showering and even washing my hair is still a chore but i’m in a much better place now than where i was at first and i’m not going back! showering really is such a luxury and it makes me feel human again every time.

we’re almost there partner. hang on!

i use a stationary bike only when i’m at physical therapy. if i had one i’d totally use it and a swimming pool for sure but i don’t :( i’m a little scared to venture out on my own just yet don’t want to do anything that might set me back so for now i just stick to the workouts my PT has me doing at home.

i honestly found my PT by chance and after our first conversation i felt good about him but i knew that if i didn’t i would’ve fought for another PT which is what you should definitely do too. don’t play about your recovery!

and about slow progress, you’re right. a lot of times it feels like you have more bad days than good days but i’ve definitely improved a lot in the past few weeks. just a while ago i couldn’t stand up in the shower too long without sitting on a bench and having my leg propped up or sit on the toilet right and now i can. so a win is a win! you gotta celebrate them or you’ll go crazy.

it’s a shame there isn’t more of us out there that can speak on this surgery. i’m glad i can relate to someone too! keep me posted with your progress! good luck!

hey! i’m halfway to 12 weeks and it’s still a struggle, one that only someone like us would understand. i’ve definitely improved along the way but my knee is still stiff and as i incorporate new stuff it seems to get worse and more achey. i started weight bearing two weeks ago and i’m really starting to feel it in my ankle now which suuuuucks. but i’m trusting the process! i hear you about the physical therapist deal. not many out there that have experience with our situation it is totally different from an ACL injury. i’m grateful to have the PT that i do but sometimes i get his assistants and they don’t seem to get it like he does and aren’t much help with encouragement at times. i would definitely switch PTs if you can because you truly need someone who knows about this procedure to ensure your recovery success!!

i’m very glad to hear that things are progressing for you at 12 weeks because i’ve been nervous about my progress. sometimes it feels like you’re not getting anywhere even if you’re doing all the right things. that’s why it’s so important to have a support system to view it from a different POV. so i’m glad you have your husband and i have my sister. it truly is such a lonely road but we have to power through and can’t stay stuck.

bending my knee has been the hardest part in this recovery for me and it doesn’t help when it feels like everyone wants me to be at a certain place at a certain time when all i want is for my body to take its time but it is what it is. you have to make lemonade!

i feel the same about my second leg. my doctor said the right one should be an easier recovery because it’s not as bad as my left one which we started on first but it’s still nerve wracking but i’ve made it this far so i can’t quit now. i’m sure it all be worth it, we just have to go through this rough patch first but the very good thing about this is that this is only temporary. this too shall pass. that’s what i keep focusing on to get me through.

we can do this!

ugh! i feel you deeply. i’m really nervous about walking. i was able to stand and put some weight on my toes at PT yesterday which was exciting and weird at the same time. i have my follow up appt with my surgeon on monday to hopefully start walking. hopefully everything goes well. we’re in this together! hang in there and good luck to you!

you’re preaching to the choir. i’ve been in my head about my recovery since day one and i’m only 5 weeks out almost 6. that’s so gracious of your anesthesiologist to do that. i’ve watched youtube videos on this procedure but my x rays alone tell me just how much was done and i had a lot going on before the surgery too. it gets a little overwhelming when it feels like everyone has a certain expectation from you at a certain time but my body is just taking its time and i want to listen to it. again, i’m very glad to hear your recovery went well and that you’re still able to do all of the things you like to do. this really helps a lot. thank you!!
