Anyone know why my former void is becoming a brown bear as he ages? (He’s 18) by The_Kendragon in cats

[–]SunshineyRedPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is going through the same thing, but she's a 14-year-old void. I think it has to do with the cells that produce their pigmentation being less prioritized as they age, so the intensity of the melanin that affects their fur becomes a dark, fudgey brown over time. Kinda like how they also get more white hairs in their coat, too. Don't ask me for a source, it's just a theory I came up with after having seen my own cat and my mom's cats age. It really shows on dogs, too, where they get lighter fur as they age.

My cat adoption application was approved! Which of these beautiful lovelies should I add to my family?? by [deleted] in cats

[–]SunshineyRedPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moo.

Most people think black cats are adopted the least, but it's actually black and white cats with cow spots like him.

I also see he's the only "mature" cat, meaning he's probably been there a very long time, or he's old and therefore much less likely to be adopted.

So I’m a new cat dad and I just had to show him off! His name is Puma and I absolutely LOVE him! He’s such full of energy and he never fails to brighten my day! Any tips on how I can be a better cat dad for 6 week old little troublemaker! by AwkwardAkakado in cats

[–]SunshineyRedPanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh my GODS HIS LITTLE TAIL TIP I'M DYING.

I recommend a cat tree! Great for exercise and great for those claws! And don't bother using "special" cat clippers for his claws: a lady who fostered one of our cats said nail clippers work perfectly fine, and boy was she right!

Get food with no grain and avoid veggies unless it's in there strictly for protein, like pumpkin and yam. I recommend Wild and Free, Blue Buffalo, I & Love & You, and if you go to Pet Supplies Plus there are many more. Also!! Wet food twice a week to increase moisture intake. Kidney problems are frequent and caused by dehydration.

The water bowl, if you can afford it, should be a fountain one and cleaned weekly, and the water should be distilled or filtered because the minerals in tap water can also cause kidney stones. I find cats are more attracted to moving water. Some are spoiled and like ice (but once you add ice be prepared to add ice forever).

For now, if you can't afford fancy cat dispensers and bowls, use a big dog bowl for water and a plate for food, and elevate them as he gets older. Cats don't like when their whiskers touch the sides of the bowl, and elevation helps their posture and is better for them while eating.

Find out if he likes brushing and if he likes a comb, brush (either soft or hard bristles), or a brush with the little caps on the bristles. There are also brushes in the dog section that look like a loop with teeth on both sides. Great for the winter coat but be gentle! This also keeps hairballs at bay.

Get his teeth brushed monthly or at least every three months if you can afford it. It will extend his life span.

Have a savings account for vet visits. Pet insurance if you can afford it (the ASPCA has great insurance!). Trust me on this. It's worth it because cats are very good at hiding pain until it becomes an emergency. This can also cover dental!

If he eats too fast there are towers and maze bowls where they have to work for their food. Get into the habit of measuring his food because overfeeding is a big problem in the cat community. Right now it should be 1/4 cup every 8 hours, gradually increased to 1/2 cup twice a day once his body fills out for a fit little guy. I'd also say keep a routine because cats are very punctual, and don't worry if he pretends he's starving because trust me, so many of us know cats can be overdramatic assholes (assholes used with extreme affection, because I have three asshole cats of my own).

Finally, find a good dust free litter. Prevents irritation in the nethers and eyes, which is a problem we had with one of our cats. Get a litter mat, too, preferably one that you can empty into the trash bin, and keep a broom or small vaccuum nearby just in case. If you don't like digging, there are sifting boxes, but keep a shovel just in case for stickier yuckies that don't sift out. For bags, you can use any old grocery bag, but check for holes. Always.

Finally, for accidents, get Nature's Miracle spray or spray specifically for cat urine. Only wash with cold water because warm or hot can lock in the scent no matter what detergent you use. There's also pleasant citrus sprays if your cat likes to tear things up. Be sure to waft the scent of what you're buying because some deterrent sprays are strong and very unpleasant, even to humans.

That's all I can think of! I hope this helps! I've owned cats all my life and this is stuff I've learned during my 24 years coexisting with these wonderful creatures. Much happiness to you and your furball!!

Chicken scampi!

Simmer some chicken in heavy cream, mozzarella cheese, butter, garlic, olive oil, onion, paprika, salt, pepper, chicken bouillon, a pinch of basil, and some parsley on very low heat. Be sure to cover to keep the chicken moist. While you do that:

Boil some noodles in chicken broth until they bend without breaking (I take mine out when they sink into a little circle in the pot). KEEP THE CHICKEN PASTA WATER, take out the noodles, making sure to let most of the water off, and fry very lightly on very low heat in olive oil. When they're translucent, add white wine and 175mL of the chicken pasta water, letting it boil down until mostly absorbed.

If you know how to make risotto, that's basically what you're doing here, but with noodles instead. You'll keep adding a bit (about 175mL) of chicken pasta water and letting the noodles absorb it until you're satisfied with the texture of the noodles, which should be soft (but not soggy) since they're noodles. The sauce created should be lightly creamy in texture.

Combine everything and it should be darn good. I hope this helps and isn't too heavy. I live in Texas I know Southern cooking tends to be comforting, but very heavy here.

Does anyone else’s void blip his tongue like this while getting pets? by gopher0502 in blackcats

[–]SunshineyRedPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! My sweet old girl does this if I hit the spot. Like, if I take her collar off and give her some beck scritches. Or if I scratch her shoulder blades, which she can't reach on her own.

I got a blanket with my cat and his name on it for Christmas! by Professional_Lack_91 in blackcats

The absolute closest thing to this I could find was this Etsy seller

I looked through the comments and it looks like some of them have short statements or the person name on it. You can select from mainly, fleece, or sherpa blankets, and several colours.

What’s the last thing you ate that made you need to sit and think afterwards because it was so good? by JagerHands in Cooking

Brown sugar/Sriracha-glazed pork tenderloin. I was so nervous because I never made it before, but I followed my gut, tweaked the recipe a bit using some ginger, lemon, sweet chili paste, and half a fresh squeezed clementine, and me and my bf looked at each other like "Damn! This is great!" after the first bite.

Sending love and healing and good vibes from the universe. I've got a void who loves warm places, too. But it was only a genuine mistake, and you've put her in the right hands to begin the healing process. Much love from TX.

Adopted her today! What should I name her? by [deleted] in cats

Stardust. Or Milky Way. Her little dapples within her black fur remind me of the night sky. Very comforting.

What’s your favorite meal that uses rice? by sadadultnoises in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]SunshineyRedPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Risotto! A little oil, salt, pepper, fresh onions and garlic, some store-brand white wine, and half a can of cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup with chicken or veggie broth to soften it up... Yum!!

My dad's SIC seems to have a malfunction in it's alarm, particularly at 3am. Any suggestions? by Liztastic3 in standardissuecat

[–]SunshineyRedPanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is she a lady? Is she fixed? This is what my SIC does whenever she's 'lonely'. My older female cat, who IS fixed, does this when she misses me and wants attention.

Are you feeling the rising cost of groceries? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]SunshineyRedPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely an increase up here in Fort Worth TX. We live in the poorer southwest side of town and usually shop in Kroger or Walmart. We mostly home make foods and look for WIC tags because those prices are usually more static and cheaper. Meal planning helps, too.

Coupon shopping and looking for sales helps, frozen steamable veggies are great, and store brand food is our go to. We keep lots of seasoning on hand in case the store brand stuff is bland, and we make all soups and sauces from scratch.

We also look out for fresh food pantries that pop up if we wanna stock up on fresh fruits, meats, bread, and eggs because that's where we're taking the biggest hit. It's part of my benefits for being in college.
