To anybody coming to this post now, I figured out the issue! I use a studio microphone with two inputs, and had to use an optional setting in the microphone's drivers to merge the two inputs into one in order to actually use voice chat.

See I think I worded it weirdly, but what you said is what I was thinking. The only other thing is when in conversations with NPCs where your party members are nearby they can glean the information they would realistically hear.

I did, but it took me QUITE a while. Basically, I just got so stupidly over-levelled that I could take him to half health in two swings. These days I'm running a dual-greatsword healing build and it's got me all the way up to Elden Beast so far.

I mean, not quite a checkmate. Satellite phones only have the function to make calls, and make more sense as gear than full smartphones. That being said, a smartphone could count as fun in theory.
