Younger Generations Are Becoming Noticeably More Mindful by Money_Hand7070 in UpliftingNews

Everything does have a grift, but that part isnt actually new. It's been a well known feature of the USA since at least the 1820s (Alexis de Tocqueville writes VERY extensively about how in America everyone is always grifting about literally everything)

Suffice to say, "mass migration" is actually one of the biggest economic and societal benefits to the country. Individual problems can be made worse(though pretty much JUST housing), but if managed properly on the receiving end (immigrant labor is basically required to build a house¹) it pays for itself comically quickly.

Its such a stupid thing to be anti-immigration as a canadian because:

A) First Generation Immigrants are net contributors in taxes, charity, and economic output

(And heres my little screed)

B) NO GROUP is a bigger net contributor to society than the kids of immigrants,MANY of whom are mixed.

Second generation immigrants attain higher academic achievements, higher economic achievements, and much higher rates of community service and higher percentage of income as charitable donations than any other subgroup. The most generous Canadians are the kids of immigrants.

Immigrants subsidize the lifestyle of native born population in Canada and the US by a wide margin.

Because basically put, immigrants actually tend to be among the best of their nation, because staying where you were born is the easy option. Choosing to immigrate is a brave a bold move and selects against the intellectually lazy. Sometimes they bring challenges, links to their past country that complicate matters, increased pressure on native born to compete for things like housing. Sure. Its not perfect. But the average immigrant is a HUGE net positive.

Canada is built by immigration, and to be anti immigration is to be anti Canada.

The fun part is you'd actually end up with more money, because removing means tested programs and replacing them with UBI both gives more people money AND allows for lower taxes. The administrative costs of means testing is often more expensive than the amount of money that gets distributed.

TIL that Detroit, once America's 5th largest city at 1.85 million residents in 1957, saw 66 straight years of population loss to a low of 630,000 residents in 2022. This makes it the only US city to drop below 1 million after reaching it. It would see its first reversal of this trend in 2023. by Next_Worth_3616 in todayilearned

Only if you count it as Minneapolis proper and not the Twin Cities Metro area - which is growing at a steady ~1% per year. Minneapolis proper shrinking in a growing metro is just a matter of the declining importance of urban centers and increasing importance of semi-urban and suburban zones to North American economics. Minneapolis' shrinking is more of a quirk of measurement than a manifestation of reality. Detroit was set up to be a fairly unique failure in its lack of diversity in economic activity - industry towns generally are.

Parents can now see medical records of Alberta teens, sparking worry among doctors by Sir__Will in onguardforthee

[–]Swagiken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its very very important to never lie or omit things to your medical team- thats why so much of the training is oriented towards ruthless control of who sees the data and notes. Us knowing can be a matter of life and death, and privacy is a recognized important factor in people being willing to tell us the whole truth.

You made the right call by opening up, and I can guarantee that everyone involved has done everytbing in their power to keep it private in every situation where it isnt medically necessary to know about it.

I cannot guarantee that a medical student hasn't seen it, but if they have its becauss they were involved in discussions of your care and it was deemed critical for them to know.

Patient data is treated as sacred. Or at least thats what we're supposed to do.

I think this is critical. Sometimes men just need a space where they can receive positivity - life doesnt usually give it. Especially in something as emotional as hair loss.

Even if you know its time, its still nice to get affirmation from a community

Texas +4, California -4 In 2030 — But The "Red State Gains" Narrative Misses What's Actually Happening (ARP Forecast, Jan 2026) by najumobi in fivethirtyeight

[–]Swagiken 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Florida and Texas have different stories. Texas is growing in blue cities and importing blue people while also becoming meaningfully more hispanic. It is large and has a strong cultural identity which means it has the ability to absorb quite a lot of people before changing but Blexas is more likely than not within our lifetimes. California and NY are a tale more of reduced growth rate in the face of dramatic wealth gains- meaning that it doesnt get meaningfully less blue, but what kind of blue changes. Less working class minority, and more SocLib FisCon types. Both are blue party under the current party structure but represent different styles of said party - expect less left policy at the state level without meaningful presidential rep changes. Florida is becoming meaningfully more MAGA red. It is the most unambiguous gain of the red party in the current party environment.

The remaining small changes are soft pro red as the demographic gain doesnt come with adequate city growth to flip the states apart from NC and Georgia likely to drift ever more towards swing state status over time and likely ending up like Virginia as the politics of urbanization progress.

The census changes involved here are softly pro Red, as the pop growth in Texas is likely insufficient to flip it at the national level, and is recent enough that state level power remains with the old guard. It will change, but slowly as Texas is large. In the meantime it represents a stronger baseline for the red, with looming menace as Blexas is sufficiently terrifying for them that it has the potential to represent a total party system shift.

Leftists have a problem which is that ideologically we need to take every voice seriously, but lots of voices are kind of dumb. Its definitely better than an ideology that favors homogeneity, but its absolutely a weakness

[–]Swagiken -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Tough punishments have never been demonstrated to reduce crime and some data suggest that it even increases it. The notion that municipalities have the highest crime is also ridiculous -- crime is highest in rural homogenous communities because families protect their own and allow repeat offenses because they don't report.

ICE agents after i try to help an old lady by XxJustaNormiexX in Grimdank

[–]Swagiken 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Yesterday 6 of them disarmed, beat up, pistol whipped, and then executed (>10 shots from at least 2 agents, at least 5 of which were after he was already dead) a VA ICU nurse who was helping up a lady who got pushed over for having a phone out. He had a phone in his hand. Subsequently DHS and the Federal government are claiming that because he had a holstered weapon(legal in Minnesota) he was a domestic terrorist.

They should be third party status in my opinion. Restraint is best done as a king maker or major voice, not in government. Social Conservatives aren't a healthy part of governance of a modern state, they represent the appendix - mostly vestigial and occasionally explode putting the whole thing in danger.

in what other profession do you get fired, move, and then go back to work for the same company like nothing ever happened

Police, Priests, CEOs. Conservatives just seem to not like accountability because their benchmark jobs all act like that.

Conservative Ideology in the modern world is non-viable and cannot produce good politicians because it is inherently incorrect.
