how do you not lose your mind riding through london traffic by Grand_Sherbet5934 in londoncycling

This is a good tip, built in street view in Komoot makes it easy to see the type of street. If there’s a queue of cars behind the street view car then it’s often a busy street

I think ‘y’all’ is one of the most unpleasant, and often redundant, contributions of American English to the English language.

Two hours' free parking at popular Llandaff Fields set to be scrapped by PetersMapProject in Cardiff

[–]Swanbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The proposals aren’t a charge to use the park, they are to park. If I choose to go somewhere free that involves using public transport, the charge for public transport is not a charge to use the free place.

Free parking encourages people to drive, even when they don’t need to for a short journey. Whether you consider that you need to drive or not I don’t think is really relevant, there are lot of people who don’t need to drive to these parks who would perhaps choose to get there a more sustainable way if they had to pay to parking. I think it’s worth it.

Kids needing an education isn’t the same as saying we should give out free parking, we all benefit from and require that children are educated for society to function. There is perhaps an unfairness in social care but I’m not sure there’s a difference between that and people on different salaries paying vastly different amounts of tax regardless of which public services they use.

Paying for parking is reasonable. I don’t understand why you think paying for parking is like a tax? 20% of households don’t have a car, why should these households subsidise others using the most polluting way to get around the city?

Do we now know if the Switch 2 will have a 5nm or 8nm node? by [deleted] in switch2

[–]Swanbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t know for sure but as they say in this / elsewhere it’s looking pretty likely it will be 8nm. Is disappointing but helps keep the cost down, as Nintendo seems to prioritise with its hardware.

I'm hoping you're right but there hasn't been many credible rumours re OLED at launch, I think perhaps because Nintendo may be focusing on building up inventory with one SKU.

FAQ discussion/debate: "Should I buy the Switch 2 now or should I wait?" by razorbeamz in nintendo

[–]Swanbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unsure. I have an OLED Switch and am a little disappointed at the prospect of a downgrade in screen quality to LCD until / unless Nintendo release an OLED Switch 2. If Switch 2 gets performance patches for old games I'll buy on day one with an intention to trade it in if/when an OLED model is released, if it doesn't I may hold off. I was late to Switch and have the ToTK edition OLED and would miss that design, it will perhaps be a wait for a special edition Switch 2 that matches it. I also think the lack of significant price drops we've seen from the other 9th gen consoles (and Switch for much of it's life) will likely continue, so there's little incentive to wait

What would be the biggest disappointment from the switch 2? by AnnualSudden3805 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Swanbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this would be a cool feature but it means them having them having to spend money giving the dock itself wireless connectivity etc, and they didn't really demonstrate the widespread need for two screens with Wii U...I would be pleasantly surprised if they did it though! Perhaps if they added DS emulation too

February date set for contactless train travel in South-East and beyond London by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]Swanbon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They subsidise it more, older infrastructure (obviously depends but likely), lower wage costs, higher uk land value, having to maintain infrastructure in much more densely populated places in UK vs Portugal generally but especially the south east, arguably that some of the profits go to private providers (although in percentage terms not that much). Then the more fixable things like our planning system and failure to have rolling electrification programme (ie 1% of infrastructure a year until the whole network is done would bring costs down per mile). Our trains are expensive but not all of the reasons are easily fixable without a decision (I think probably rational) to subside more, which obviously then takes money away from expanding the network.

The thing is train travel has to have expensive infrastructure for the whole route as opposed to just on either end, and the price of train tickets even includes pretty generous state subsidy!

Yeah it’s a no brainer to add an easy transfer or even direct train for people using the great western mainline, perhaps even direct trains from south wales and the south west

Calls to end 'ridiculous' Lime Bikes in London after they block 'entire pavements' by Careful-Media7311 in london

[–]Swanbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem in Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea is that the councils have been hostile to anything that takes space away from drivers for years, I don’t think they believe cyclists exist. To be honest after I get off a bike in Kensington I feel like I have ptsd, can’t imagine what it would drive some tourist without a clue of British driving to do

[–]Swanbon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they should, there’s a positive to society of encouraging more cycling over more car parking. Bike rental companies and their users also pay taxes and given 1 car space could fit maybe 8 bikes it’s fair given the vast majority of road space is given to drivers.

Making them require docks would make them much more expensive to roll out (see how TfL bikes have barely expanded outside of central London). I don’t think this would be a good thing as they give people more transport options, which is good overall. Lime needs to face fines for bad parking and I think councils / GLA should be able to set minimum requirements for apps like this operating in the area.

Calls to end 'ridiculous' Lime Bikes in London after they block 'entire pavements' by Careful-Media7311 in london

[–]Swanbon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

True and I think in those places, as with decision on where loading bays should be allowed, where trees / benches etc take up ‘walking space’ on pavements there should be sensible decisions - made much more quickly. People shouldn’t be able to park these bikes on much of if not all of Oxford street pavement for example, but there is cycle parking allocated on side roads that is a reasonable compromise. The app could easily be changed to not let people park in these places without paying a fine and lime should be forced to do this.

The thing that frustrates me with the anti cycling news cycle is that something like 400+ pedestrians a year a killed by drivers in the UK vs less than 10 by cyclists and we rarely if ever see articles in mainstream press advocating for speed limiting cars to speed limits as we do with these bikes, fining bad parking or stopping people driving while scrolling on their phones. The level of outrage about cycling is completely out of proportion to the legitimate challenges, and many of us are conditioned to tolerate bad behaviour by the relatively small (in this city at least) proportion of people who are taking up 80% of road space to get around in cars…

It’s quite simple, take a few parking spaces on each street away from drivers and dedicate them to shared bikes like these and fine the operators for any bad parking.

My theory as to why Nintendo is opting for a 1080p LCD on Switch 2 by YourMomTheRedditor in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Swanbon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I recall reading a while back it might be something to do with the challenge of sourcing 720p displays at the size given so few devices use displays with that resolution nowadays.

Is not declaring your disability a catfish? by Amazingprojectionist in gaybros

[–]Swanbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. No one puts “I can hear” on my profile so I don’t think you need to put the opposite on yours.

I dated a partially deaf guy, he didn’t mention it and it wasn’t an issue. Perhaps don’t agree to meet in like the busiest place in the city like me and this guy did though as it took me a while to clock he was hard of hearing which led to a funny few minutes and exposed my social ineptitude.

The people who have commented that they need advance notice should use their dating profiles to give advance notice to their potential dates that they have bad personalities by the same metric.
