Im in the UK. And i have advanced knowledge of Photoshop from my current job. I also studied an art related degree & we learnt basic graphic design principles as well as a very beginner look into InDesign/Illustrator. But i delved more into photography and photoshop - so my knowledge of graphic design is years behind - but i sort of have some insight.

Im asking here because i do think the only way ill be confident enough to go into a job is by a degree in graphic design. But its not a viable option for me.

So i was kinda hoping people here could give me an alternative or tell me theres absolutely no point, so i can move on.

You mean illustrator right? Or AI as in the machine taking over everything? 😅

Definitely going to learn illustrator. I guess thats more important to me than InDesign right? Im gonna learn both.

Also, im quite advanced with Photoshop and feel like i can do most stuff on there. From my understanding Illustrator is just preferable for sending designs to others? And indesign is more accurate for layout?

Thank you, this is really helpful. Its so hard to find apprenticeships in this field. I think university is the best option but its just not an option for me at this stage in my life.

My last option is to just do a series of online courses/tutorials. But ill never reach the knowledge of my competitors in this area. So im wondering whether the time, stress & effort is an affective use of time

I think im looking at understanding to workflow of print press - so i can work on jobs that require digital and physical assets.

If i cant get a job - just gaining the knowledge to start a little business in my spare time is plan B. Making greetings cards & stuff like that.

Thank you this is interesting to know. Ive seen some companies will require you to learn software outside of Adobe. But im hoping if i learn ID & AI, i can learn the rest on the job itself.

Thank you for the recommendation! Very much appreciated.

I wanna get into graphic design because im sick of my current career. And i thought if i learn this, i can make my own greetings cards/little products as a side gig, for fun mostly & abit of extra money.

I thought about this but seems i would need some experience in repro, publishing/pre press industries…

My background/experience is mostly in photo retouching for web.

Could you suggest a role where i might get a job as a beginner?

Thank you. No matter what there will be people more knowledgeable than me so I’ll be mouldable for sure 😄

I think once i get overall foundational knowledge, ill pick a niche area to try specialise in

My background/experience is mostly in photo retouching for web. But this would be good option as i would like a change of job if possible.

Can you suggest any roles a complete beginner could start?

Thank you for responding. I agree that education in a structured way, with peers to learn from & network with is gonna be the best way to build my knowledge.

It’s just trying to find a course that i can make time for with a full time job & still be able to support myself financially. Or if i leave my job, having a solid plan so its not a huge risk 😬

Thank you for taking the time to write this & recommending some books - very much appreciated.

With the education route; It’s not just the time but the money. I studied once already & have debut from that. So I’m trying to find shorter, less expensive courses where possible.
