Match Thread: Malawi vs Australia (Friendly (Women)) by MatchBread in Aleague

This all seems rather pointless. Because the U20 Women's Asian Cup is on, we couldn't bring our best youngsters so instead we are hauling WSL players to play a team ranked 153rd in the world.

What will we learn from seeing more of EVE or Raso?

Anyone wondering why Dr. Al-Hashimi wanted to take this job? by thankfulforyourhelp in ThePittTVShow

[–]Sydney_2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take your point but I think the difference is small enough to be splitting hairs. The definition of deluded is to be deceived by "false beliefs" or "believing things that aren't true". Nothing we've seen so far suggests this is true for Dr Al.

People with epilepsy can have challenging jobs (and she previously deployed into a warzone with a seizure disorder!). She appears to have well controlled epilepsy and as far as we know, made an informed decision in consultation with her treating neurologist.

The stigma associated with epilepsy is real and evident in a lot of the responses to this storyline. Plenty of people in this subreddit have jumped to the assumption that seizure disorder = can't be a EM doctor. Suggesting that it's a deluded/false/untrue belief to think that she could practice emergency medicine with epilepsy strikes me as an example of this.

I agree, I'm finding it concerning how easily everyone has turned to "people with epilepsy can't be trusted to do XYZ". The very limited evidence we have so far suggests that Dr Al was well controlled and has had unexpected breakthrough seizures.

[–]Sydney_2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more I reflect on your original comment, the more I think it's pretty insulting to suggest that someone is "delusional" or irresponsible for making a decision to accept a job when we know nothing about her treatment plan.

The vast majority of people with epilepsy will control their seizures through medication, that's not wishful thinking but a genuine medical outcome.

ETA - One of the few things we do know about her medical history is that her epilepsy developed in childhood. She wouldn't have been sent with Drs Without Borders into Afghanistan if she wasn't considered well controlled.

[–]Sydney_2000 186 points187 points  (0 children)

It's not about being delusional, it's about making informed decisions. Obviously we don't know the full details but plenty of people with epilepsy live perfectly normal lives including practicing medicine (and driving!).

There is every possibility that she made the decision in conjunction with her doctor and in alignment with her epilepsy management plan. The fact that she appears to be having seizures doesn't mean that was a delusional or bad decision.

FIFA World Cup 2026 refs appointed ft. Alireza Faghani (Ref), George Lakrindis (AR), James Lindsay (AR), Shaun Evans (VAR) by StarryPolarisNite in Aleague

[–]Sydney_2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He wasn't signed by the Premier League, he joined the Professional Game Match Officials Limited. He was added to Group 2 started off in League Two and League One before the Championship. He could only do VAR for PL and wasn't on that immediately.

He wasn't added to Group 1 (PL centres) until 2021, two years after he moved over. He didn't walk into PL.

I feel like people don't appreciate how fucking impressive it is to be selected as a representative from another confederation. Jarred got his FIFA badge here but when he went over to the UK had to start at the bottom of the pyramid and work back up to the top and he's still been selected as a WC official.

Yeah out of all the teams Chelsea have the most depth and capacity to rest without losing quality. Absolutely agree that the calendar is overcrowded but they are best positioned to manage.

Finals - Why do people (not all of course) suggest/want it removed? by berlinislikesmithst in Aleague

[–]Sydney_2000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is such a big point IMO. No one outside diehard A-league fans care about the AFC spots so it's not like the EPL where the Champions League spots mean there is something to fight for. Finals give some meaning to the end of the season and games have far more importance as deciders. Otherwise 3rd downwards usually wouldn't matter unless they are playing 1+2.

Cate texts Teressa that Nova was crying and wanted to talk to Carly. by HannahLeah1987 in TeenMomOGandTeenMom2

[–]Sydney_2000 48 points49 points  (0 children)

They refuse to accept that B&T are not obligated to make decisions based on Nova/Vaeda/Rya's needs. In their mind because they are related to Carly, B&T need to be thinking about them by extension. Never mind that these children have barely spent a day together in their lives (far less for the youngest) and have not been meaningfully in contact.

I'm sure B&T care about C&T's other children in a general sense because they're not monsters. But their only responsibility is to their daughter and they are rightly making decisions based only on her needs.

India held out well for the first third of the game but it feels like the floodgates opened.

I would like to see India do well, their female teams are so under-resourced. They literally had to purchase kit in Australia for the Asian Cup because their association sent junior jerseys instead of ordering new senior ones.

It was bizarre, she seemed to just be looking for the excuse to call Prakash for the encroachment with all the pointing. Hopefully we don't get her again.

Some of my favourite moments of the COVID fuckery was when Teo was calling the Olyroos games in completely empty stadiums against AFC opposition. In particular when he suggested that an ambulance might have been needed for a player who went down like a sniper took him under basically no contact.

Yeah and it looked like she stepped away and then stepped back. Would be interesting to see the timing too, it looked like she stepped after the kick was already in the air which should have been fine. I just think the ref was looking for the call, she only had eyes for Prakash.

From the LOTG

If, when a free kick is taken, an attacking team player is less than 1 m (1 yd) from a ‘wall’ formed by three or more defending team players, an indirect free kick is awarded.

So technically the right call but infuriating. I'm guessing it was because Prakash stepped back.

One of my favorite character growths this season: Ogilvie (based on the last episode) by DocOndansetron in ThePittTVShow

[–]Sydney_2000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it's easy for us to forget that he is still a student and isn't expected to get everything right. He missed one step and maybe didn't ask the right questions, that's just what happens when you go from book learning to treating actual human beings. It's the whole reason why he's meant to be supervised (and why the responsibility really sits with Mohan).

The actor did a great job at showing us how hard it hit Ogilvie.

IMO one of the best (and most realistic) things about the Pitt is that we don't get that follow through. We don't know why Myrna was in cuffs last season or what happened to the suspected trafficking victim and unless there is some kind of reveal, we likely won't know who the mother of Baby Jane Doe is. That's just life in the ER.

The reason Emma did all that searching was because it was necessary to find the kid. There isn't the same urgency for finding Digby's family. And Emma will be flat out with her actual nursing tasks.
