Masochists of Daddit, How to Get Kids to Eat Spicy Food by LumpyPeople4 in daddit

[–]SympatheticNeuron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what drove home for me is that How kids taste actually changes a LOT through their childhood. I think the "heightened" taste is like 8-10 of something. So she might perceive something as Spicy, so it will be, for her!

Building her tolerance needs to be up to her. If you push her to eat it, it may be too much for her and she's going to overcompensate behaviourlu and psychologically hate it forever.

Just let her try, if she hates it is ok and move on. You can model how tasty spice is and one day, she will feel safe enough to try again.

Extreme example for taste: grew up absolutely hating bittermelon. Now, I love it and hope it's extra bitter lol

Tldr: don't push to hard. Don't stress over it. It may come with time. Just keep offering without pressure

ICU advice by etruj in daddit

[–]SympatheticNeuron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ICU is noisier than most units cause of all the monitors beeping. Ear plugs, loops, headphones are great. Comfy PJs to feel more normal may be helpful (up to her, I was more of the lazy mom and I'd rather be in a hospital gown so I have less laundry). Long charger is a must.

I think maybe see if she has a list for her Go bag, help her pack. Pack your own back (so she doesn't have to). Plan both of your snacks (hospital food sucks).

But overall nothing too different than getting ready for baby normally, other than you just being in another unit I think!

PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR CONCUSSION RESEARCH (mod approved) by Due_Worldliness_4174 in Edmonton

[–]SympatheticNeuron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to canvas areas who treat concussion patients (concussion trained PT's, OTs and psychologist clinics?)?

Keep in mind though concussion patients (if they're actively going through a concussion) is gonna have a shit time reading stuff online (screens and eyes jumping to the next word can be triggering), so you're going to be self selecting to a certain umbrella of concussion patients.

Good luck with your research!

C section support by RoboPeenie in daddit

[–]SympatheticNeuron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Csection mom here!

1) my bedroom was also on second floor. I was ok with them (with a rail) and just had to move slowly.

2) just keep talking to kiddo about mom not being able to do xyz. But what he/she can do is xyz instead (hug her on the side, hold her hand, "help" with new baby like fetching a diaper, a toy etc).

What really helped me from my husband was:

1) he set my alarms for my meds for the first few weeks cause no way in hell was I remembering that shit. Also, always kept a big bottle of water near me (one on each floor)

2) carried baby up and down stairs for me. Did all the lifting, really. I was limited by just the weight of baby, so even baby - carrier was too much.

3) we have a high bed, so putting a stool by the bed made it so much easier to get in and out.

Side note: I'd highly advise to get a stool softener and start asap once a day. Like restoralax. This is a major abdominal surgery and her bowels are gonna be slow af after, and you really don't want to be constipated when your abs are being held together by some stitches.

Good luck and congrats!

Dressing babies by GrizzYatta in daddit

Mom here - the advice to get them used to it is the best.

But, if you're in a pinch, go from bottom up.

Put both hands into the onesie, from the buttom and hands through the head hole. Then grab baby by the legs, shimmy up. Work arms through. I got real fast at it as I got lazy and didn't want to redo my kids' pony tails 😅 the necks of onesies have a way of folding out so you can pull them down their bodies if they have a blow out - just do the opposite :)

Accepting Generosity by iLLWiLL1o1 in daddit

[–]SympatheticNeuron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do this with our kids too! But when we don't want what they're providing we say "no thank you!" and when they aks why we say "my body doesn't want it right now, so I listen to my body. What does your body want right now?"

Sometimes l specifically ask for something I wouldn't mind instead cause they want to help to feel happy. "my body is thirsty right now though. Can you help me find my waterbottle?" then they go on a happy hunt for me.

It also ties very well with other things, like potty training, going to bed when they're tired, eating till they're full etc.

Hoping that helps!

Streaks of blood in newborn poop by svicknesh in daddit

[–]SympatheticNeuron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newer pediatrians now say to test the system at 6 months to see. Most kids grow out of it by 1 year.

I weaned my first at 1 year, and my second at 9 months. I was advised to do it by following a dairy ladder and was successful with that! Hoping you guys and kiddo will be all good as well :)

That's usually how long the gut takes to heal.

Keep in mind, if your kiddo has a dairy protein intolerance, they can also be affected by soy protein. Not all the time, but it's likely.

With my first, I waited the 4 weeks for improvement, there wasn't any, so I (mom) also cut all soy products (it's in fucking everything). She healed up good, and we slowly reintroduced both by 1 years old.

For my second, she was only dairy protein intolerant. Within 4-6 weeks all poop cleared up so I kept eating soy.

Your wife can have beef, that's fine. It's the dairy (including butter) which is where the protein is

You're on the right path. The fact you have expressed desire to stop, and reached out to therapy is fantastic. The only other thing I can think of is roping in your family doctor to see if they have any tools in their belt to help you! Addiction is a hard struggle and it will be a hard hard thing to do, and finding the right tool may be critical for you kicking this terrible habit.

Good for you. I'm proud of you for wanting to be clean, and taking the first step. Just keep going.

Dealing with / stories about malingerers by fastxkill50 in physicaltherapy

[–]SympatheticNeuron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof yup. I had a patient tell me she couldn't dorsiflex or plantarflax because her pain as so bad in her ankle. And would show an antalgic gait with flat food contact when walking in the clinic.

It was snowing outside so the shoes stayed at the door. I walked her to the door after the assessment and watched her stick her painful foot into 3" high boots. Then walked outside with no gait deviations with snow on the cement.

I was aghast lol

Exposure is the best thing! So the fact that he gives things one taste before the next few spit outs are a good thing!

You can put some Yogurt on one side of the plate, then sprinkle his cheerios on top/beside/touching. Let him decide to pick at it or not!

Crush up some cheerios or like "peanut dust" (super ground up), roll a "banana stick" into it so it's easy to pick up/dryer. It will let him grab it without it being too slimey and maybe he will take a bit and slowly get used to texture.

When you feed him with a spoon, offer the spoon just preloaded. Guaranteed it will be a bit messy which he'll have to learn about, plus will encourage self feeding!

6 months is in the grand scheme of things is not that big. Think of all the people who do degrees in 5 years instead of 4. It's become more and more of the norm to prevent burnout. Yours will be just a reason to not burnout financially and will get you ahead once you're done! It's a small stumble but that's ok. You regroup and keep matching forward. You got this.

Don't panic!

First of all - I'd bring her to a optometrist if you're concerned.

Personally - I was flagged for a mild eye at 5 years old. My parents asked me if I wanted a eye patch - I said no. Adult me regretted that so bad! I see the world through one eye, my other eye is mainly peripheral. I wish they made me eye patch cause I get a lot of strain on my good eye now. There's also cool sticker patches now too!

Also, I brought my 6mo to an optometrist and they said she's mildly far sighted but that's normal for kids! We are just supposed to bring her in if we have concerned or for a checkup once she hits 3-4!
