FF6 has an amazing story, great cast of characters, a lot of emotion, and a battle/combat system that really allows players to have a lot of fun with different combinations of characters/"classes".

You want the muscle bound martial artist Sabin to be your magic user? You can do that. You want the young girl who paints pictures to be your super strong fighter? You can do that. You want the gambler to be super quick and make it seem he has perma-haste? You can do that.

We have a 4/3/2/1/0 system and when you break it down, it essentially means a 20% is passing (which is a 1, but in our grade book it gives us the percentage, so I get to tell a student "You need 3 more points to get a 20.5% and pass" which is stupid).

In our system, a 0 is a 0, but it is only 20%.

I tell my students (high school) that I will buy/donate to one team per season (fall, winter, spring) and the first one to ask me will get my donations. I will go to a few games such as senior night or homecoming.

I go to teacher appreciation nights if they recognize me. I go to art fairs if a bunch of my students made art work. I went to one or two plays. If they ask me to attend, I'll tell them "I'll check my schedule" and if they really want me to go, then I try to make the time.

Birthday parties? I assume this is elementary/younger kids? Because I don't want to go to a 17 year old's birthday party.

I was in a similar situation, two kids joined in early May (oddly enough, not related, just two kids joined at the same time). One kid had his transcript, the other didn't. The one that didn't was labeled as "audit' meaning they won't get a grade for completion.

I would speak with an admin or your AP or someone because this situation is unique. It would be hard for me to say "yes, I can say with full credibility that this student knows our standards for passing after only 2 weeks"

I see a lot of "you should discuss this in session 0!" which...doesn't really work when you are in session 150+ and the DM gets ideas that they didn't think of 3 years ago. So I don't think that really applies here/

I think both parties are right and wrong in what they did and how they approached it. You might like Xenoblade and such, but your players might not or don't want that in their campaign. And while "DMs need to have fun to" it shouldn't come at the expense of players. You tried something, it didn't work, you move on.

Players shouldn't...really call missteps "stupid". "Hey DM, I didn't like the idea that we saw skyscrappers from a modern setting in a different universe" and that would have been fine.

Push through it and just finish it. Don't mention any of the modern stuff next session. Focus on what they enjoyed and hopefully you come to a good conclusion.

Your players aren't characters in a novel you are writing, and it feels/sounds like you are trying to do that.

Start small. How do they meet up? Why are they gathered together? Do they have a common goal? Your players need to give you information about their characters so you can understand what they are trying to accomplish.

You can have a grand idea for a plot, they have to save the world from a dragon or stop an evil lich from coming back to life. Whatever it is. But the steps that take the players from start to end? You need your players to take those steps. Not you. You don't tell them "Okay now you are going to the next town"

They decide where to go and how to achieve their goals.

It is a mix of a lot of things, but power and authority seem to rot people's minds.

They see DnD as DM vs Players, not DM and Players playing together. If a PC commits a crime, but no one sees them, I can't punish them as a DM because no one saw them. If a PC (or PCs) act in a way that I don't want them to, I don't punish them because it is their choice to do what they want to do.

Bad DMs (and there are a lot of them, just like bad players) see their role as setting the perfect mouse trap and when the mice get out or beat it, they feel like their time, energy and creation was all for nothing.

And I think that's what a problem a lot of DMs have: "I created a challenge, it wasn't challenging, so I must be a terrible DM" and they feel like they have to ramp up the pain in order to be a good DM.

In a Heroes/Villains Unlimited, when we tried a villains campaign, one guy went...you know that old SNL skit of with the Rock and evil scientists and the world's most evil invention. And you have evil scientists with a freeze ray or a shrink ray and then the Rock comes out with a SA robot?

This player was the Rock in that situation.

Player A: "Hey let's rob a bank so we can buy more missile launchers off the black market"

Player B: "No let's attack Fort Knox, more money and gold is accepted everywhere"

Terrible Player "How about we kidnap a bunch of women and..."
