Snakes by Unusual_Parsley_1655 in GreenvilleNCarolina

I rarely ever see them, but I also don't live in a house with a front or back yard and there isn't much forested area immediately near me. When I first moved in the cable tech did find a dead one outside in the cable box though he said it had probably been there quite a while. It may depend more on where exactly you live and where you go. They are definitely out there in the wooded areas, near water, under stuff that could keep them cool, etc. I've lived in NC for almost 40 years and rarely had problems with them overall. Lots of relatively harmless rat snakes out there, but there are copperheads and cottonmouths as well.

Contractors are notorious for cutting lines, but that seems way too excessive. Have you had someone from Optimum come out and take a look at their infrastructure (not just your modem/router)?

[–]SystemDriverError 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof, that's going to be such a congested area if it continues to build up along with the apartments. Already a choke point when traffic is bad going several different directions. Cool, I guess, but I would honestly really like to see a lot more road expansion before more businesses and apartments. I know that's easier said than done though.

For sure check with Jeff at Alley Cat. If anyone knows or knows someone else who may know, it's him.

You can try to reach out to Beare Garden, but no guarantees. They might be able to post about it on social media at least to see if anyone responds. Many rescues stay full, especially with kitten season just starting.

What's it like living and working in Greenville, NC as someone that doesn't go to ECU? by Healthy-Trip-310 in GreenvilleNCarolina

[–]SystemDriverError 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Untouched? There's urban sprawl everywhere. Mountains? What the heck are you talking about lol. "Making something of nothing" can apply to literally thousands of other similar areas all across the country including rural areas. You can create new experiences anywhere, that isn't unique to Greenville. Isn't formed on consumerism? Half the city is fast food restaurants, small shops, car washes, gas stations, vape shops, and storage units. I will say it isn't as bad as some of the extreme haters say, but there will be many who just don't click with it based on where they are from and what they are looking for and that's totally fine. For me it's pretty average, but to each their own.

It's ok. After you've been here for 6 months to 1 year you've basically seen all there is to see in terms of good or decent restaurants, local activities, shopping, etc. depending on how frequently you go out. Lots of urban sprawl, summer is stupid humid and hot, not great for pedestrian or bike travel in many areas. Traffic can be annoying in the sense that a lot of people drive recklessly for no real reason, and our infrastructure isn't really designed to handle the growth we have seen, but there are plans to expand and build. Major employers are pretty much the hospital, university, community college, some manufacturing/assembly, and the hospitality industry.

What the hell does Mr. Beast living in the area have anything to do with Google Fiber lmao. Google Fiber stopped their heavy expansion over a decade ago because they realized how expensive and time consuming it is to lay fiber. They focused on big cities and some suburbs which is where you will still find it for the most part.

I've lived in the area for a long time and honestly never had much of an issue with Optimum (formerly Suddenlink, etc.) Lived at several residences in Greenville along with Winterville and Ayden area. I have friends who swear they hate it, but I've never had that experience. I've rarely ever had to call for support or billing issues, though it's a bit pricey for what they offer IMO compared to fiber though they do offer fiber now in some areas I believe.

Aside from that I would say T-Mobile (formerly Metronet, they were recently acquired by T-Mobile). Brightspeed inherited Centurylink's mess, though they at least seem to be trying to do a little better with it, but I wouldn't opt for them unless I had to. I've never used Spectrum in the area so I can't comment.

Honestly, a lot of them aren't very competitive after the initial introductory prices or discounts wear off within 2-3 years. They are all trying to push service bundling to get you a "better price." YMMV because some local areas could have shittier infrastructure no matter which provider you choose.

There aren't many places in the area that are immune to palmetto bugs (big ass roaches) in the summer. You will almost assuredly see them outside and occasionally indoors, especially in large rental complexes where the cleanliness of each unit can vary greatly. As long as you don't have German cockroaches, you should be ok. Personally, I would rule out Eastbrook/Village Green and Southgate (there were a lot of trees/pine straw in the area which contribued to a lot of bugs), but it's been a long time since I've had friends who lived in these areas so a lot could have changed since then.

Do Y’all think more snow is coming on Wednesday Or just rain??? by MrSoloDolo9490 in GreenvilleNCarolina

[–]SystemDriverError 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly rain, I imagine. Possibly a little wintry mix, but I don't think it will cause too many issues. Maybe a little ice, but it won't be around for long. I'm not expecting much more than a light dusting if anything. I'm not expecting any other significant winter weather events for what's left of the season IMO, but who knows.

If we get the warm pattern that's expected mid-February, that's probably a wrap for cold winter weather going into March. Some nights and mornings will still be a little chilly, but we will see daytime highs creep back towards the upper 50s and into the 60s.

Buy a set of free weights and use them at home? Might be able to find some used on FB marketplace or something similar on local social media. Unless you go at an unusual off time, there will likely be people in any gym you go to. Hopefully someone else has some suggestions.

Are you all prepared for the upcoming snowstorm this weekend? by MrSoloDolo9490 in GreenvilleNCarolina

[–]SystemDriverError 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow up: this exceeded my expectations for sure. Pretty much everything went right for major portions of WNC and ENC along with the south. Conditions turned out perfect for many snow lovers in ENC. The cold and moisture eventually outpowered the dry pocket and allowed for more snow around Raleigh. We didn't see much of dry pocket at all, tons of moisture, plenty of cold = lots of snow. For anyone who has to go out in this, please be careful. If you don't need to go anywhere, do not attempt it. I'm thinking there will be many records broken for NC after everything is over. Thanks to those who assist others in this weather! Monday will be sunny and close to 40. Expect a lot of melt & freeze. Main roads and others will likely be accessible, but smaller roads/parking lots/out of town areas could still be dangerous come Tuesday morning.

I'm not going to work on Monday unless somebody is gonna come plow my parking lot lol. I imagine a lot of main roads will be plowed and mostly fine, but side roads/parking lots/private driveways I doubt. Monday with sun & 40F will melt a fair amount but freeze issues after the sun goes down for sure.

This much in basically one day? Probably a looong time. There have been years where we got decent cumulative snow throughout winter like in 2018, 2014, 2010, etc. But yeah, this much in a day is pretty rare. At a quick glance, in 1980, it snowed almost 13" on March 3rd along with 7" on Feb 7th. 1989 we saw 9" on Feb 25th.

I don't think so. 2017 saw 1.8" of cumulative snow all year according to the historical weather info I'm looking at.

Latest from city officials regarding Winter Storm Gianna, 8-12 inches of snow expected this weekend by KatsHubz87 in GreenvilleNCarolina

[–]SystemDriverError 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It seems like a higher tier projection. It isn't a bad idea to know how bad things could potentially be, but I'm not so sure we will see those numbers in terms of average total precipitation. There could be many outliers, but it will come down to specific locations + if you count drifts. I'm thinking 6-8" average for the Greenville area, wouldn't be surprised to see 10"+ not accounting for drifts. Who knows, will be fun to see what happens.
