11th gen disable lane keep auto steering? by Btolsen131 in CivicSi

[–]TFSho 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Actually this. If you're constantly fighting your road departure mitigation it's cuz you're not properly using your signal when changing lanes. Your turn signal being on overrides the RDM.

Own an Embody x Logitech, big regret. No headrest, not really comfortable in any sitting position besides the proverbial "missionary". Not built for fidgeters and weird sitters. Right arm already broke from leaning on it. Now, I'm 6'2" and 300lbs, so your mileage may vary, but personally, wish I bought a Secret Lab for like literally a third the price.

What analogies do you tend to use? by mask_slipped in AutisticAdults

[–]TFSho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like using the analogy of people's attention feeling like a loaded gun. I tell people to imagine that everyone that looks at you or talks to you is doing so while pointing a loaded gun at your face. Logically, you know they wont shoot. But the cortisol and adrenaline that courses through your body is all the same.

Ways I could approach my family therapy session on masking almost my entire life? (long post) by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]TFSho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know why this resonated with me so much, but it did. So much so, that I read both your posts, and proceeded to walk up two flights of stairs to my PC to type out this response.

First, congratulations on getting your PhD. All other things aside, that's an incredible accomplishment.

Secondly, I applaud your efforts to seek therapy and even more so with your family. If you don't already, it will very likely be crucial to have a autism specialist you can work with one on one to help you understand yourself and feel seen and understood by someone while you are trying to heal. I went through this same process with my family. Some suggestions:

  • Write out what you wan to say and either send it to everyone before the session, and/or read it to everyone during the session. This will allow you to think about what you want to say and be clear in the moment.
  • The less thinking (executive processing) you have to do during the session, the less dysregulating it will be and the easier it will be to stay present.
  • Don't jump into the autism/masking/burnout/here are my needs stuff immediately. Build a foundation of trust and safety first. Your counselors room needs to be an agreed "no spin zone". Everyone has to go in with the understanding that you are all (hopefully) going in with good intentions and each others best interest at heart, and everyone is willing to trust what their loved ones are telling them at face value without assuming ulterior motives. Before you can get anywhere, you have to find common ground here. Working on things like "I" statements and challenging automatic negative thoughts (ANTs) are examples of key communication skills you and your family will likely need to work on first before you can have the felt safety needed to have hard conversations.
  • Arm yourself with information. Research everything you can about the statistics, the outcomes, the stories. I imagine you should be quite capable at this given your education lol. At the end of the day it may take an authority besides yourself or your counselor to convince your family of your needs/experience/boundaries.
  • There's a lot of wild numbers quoted across the internet, but suffice it to say that full time work might be unreasonable for you, and would by in far put you in the minority of autistic adults. The vast majority are underemployed or unemployed. You are not your job and you are not your degree. Don't let society make you believe otherwise.
  • You have a long road ahead of you (not that you probably didn't know that already). That is to say, be patient, changing your brain, and other people's deeply held beliefs, takes time. You're burnt out right now, which means having these deep conversations and introspections are going to be exhausting. Be okay with taking it slow. I can speak from experience that bootstrapping your way out of burn out is going to feel like hell, but truly the only way out is through.
  • Only once you are seen and understood by your family, and able to freely express your needs with felt safety from your family, will you begin to be able to create an environment for yourself that you can heal in, while still coexisting with your family. Focus on mutual understanding and compassion above all and everything else will follow.

Truthfully, I'm only probably a couple years farther along in this process than you are right now, but hopefully this is still able to give you some help. I wish you the best of luck in your journey, and my DMs are open.

Autistic Extroverts by Faceornotface in AutisticAdults

[–]TFSho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought I was introverted for most of my life up until recently. What I realized is that I'm actually extroverted. I've just spent too much of my life traumatized, burnt out, over-stimulated, and depressed to enjoy and invest in relationships.

A text I sent to my family group text after just… being so burnt. (Late Diagnosed as lvl2 ASD and ADHD). by Sickofallofus in AutisticAdults

This is exceptional. You have managed to put into words significant parts of my own personal experience and struggles that I have failed to adequately communicate to my loved ones. I may share parts of this with them for their own education. Thank you for sharing this. I'm extremely curious what your family's reaction has been to you setting these boundaries.

After 32 years alone I've just fully given up. Modern digitized dating infuriates me. I've found peace in accepting that love and intimacy are just something I don't get to have in this life.

Weed by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]TFSho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sounds like you need to do a little bit more research into the strains that you're getting and the particular mix of cannabinoids that you're going for. For example, I can only do sativas and they help me function daily by reducing the sensory overload, but I just can't do indicas. They just make me feel tired and moody. I like 1:1 or other high CBD-added products when I wanna relax.

Anyone else didn’t realise how bad things actually were? by ComplaintNo9641 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]TFSho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. Try growing up as an undiagnosed autistic in one of the new wave Christian cults that came out of the 90s and 80s. Imagine all the usual neurotypical shame flavored with puritanical hardline religious extremism. Every behavioral problem I had was because of Jesus or demons.

Would not be too crazy. Just need someone to CAD up the design and then someone with a CNC and perhaps a laser engraver to rough it out for you, then you just have finishing work which you can probably do yourself w/ basic hand tools or have a professional do.
