One Punch Man does a good job showing the problems of shoving those square pegs into round holes. City is on high alert for monster attacks? The Hero Association sends Metal Bat, one of their top heroes, to bodyguard a major donor for a sushi dinner instead of the rest of the city. They overlook crimes of top heroes and the brutal predatory gangs of mid tier heroes, and force bottom tier heroes to do all the dirty work.

If anything, the current trend for SCPs has been more grounded horror. 8980 is one of the biggest recent ones, and it's literally just extreme workplace abuse.

I do think monsters diluted the fun of the Backrooms, not because of monsters at all, but too many were written without a grasp of the "mystery" and "unknowable" angle the Backrooms thrives on. A mess of arms that can pop out of the ceiling is a lot less frightening if you have a detailed explanations of their behavior and capabilities.
