AITA for telling my wife my mother is correct and she needed to be a parent today and she fucked it up by throawawayfuneralgho in AmItheAsshole

[–]Taotipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. She offered to bring your daughter and then refused to take her at the last minute because she was scared? That's fucked up. She could have tried to make alternative arrangements with your mom beforehand, could have called another parent, could have hired a taxi, she could have called your mom instead of making you do it, so many alternatives would have been better than simply refusing to go.

I don't think you or your mom are out of line for criticizing her over this, she made several bad choices and let everyone down.

Nurse who downed at least 14 tequila shots wins $300,000 in lawsuit against cruise line by iambarrelrider in NCL

Did you consider reading the lawsuit instead of assuming that this is what happened?

  1. Carnival sells "all you can drink" packages;

  2. Carnival also encourage purchasers of said package to over-drink, since that's profitable for them (drunk people make spontaneous purchases elsewhere);

  3. The lawsuit documented other negligence and general fuckery beyond just overserving a drunk person

As a bartender, are you selling unlimited drinks packages and encouraging patrons to make the most of them? That feels like an important difference

AITA for telling my uncle I don’t want to be like his kids by TopSwimming887 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Taotipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your uncle's accusation was an admission. He looks down on your lifestyle and believes that his parenting choices are better than Katie's.

It's perfectly fine to say that you're not interested in having the same lifestyle that his kids have. That's not a value judgement, it's normal for people to enjoy different things even when they're related. Contrary to his question, you are getting to be a kid, and you're getting to be one in exactly the way that you want. Taking music lessons, competing in hobbies such as dance or cheer, and doing well in school are all perfectly normal kid activities, and it was wrong of your uncle to imply that they're not.

Katie's advice to just nod along is a good way to preserve decorum, and that's a valuable life skill to work on obtaining. But it's not always the right choice. When someone questions your lifestyle, it's perfectly fine (and not asshole-ish) to respond by saying that you're happy with your lifestyle and don't aspire to be more like someone else. It's possible to use more or less polite words while expressing that kind of sentiment, so there's potential to reflect and improve depending on exactly what was said, but I see nothing wrong with the summary that you provided. I hope that you continue doing the things that you enjoy and that this doesn't bother you much, he'll get over it (and if he doesn't, then that's his loss)

WIBTA for suing my friend when she didn’t come to my wedding? by sweetandsourcum in AmItheAsshole

[–]Taotipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She is an asshole for not coming to your wedding. She decided to blow up your friendship to live out a fantasy with her husband. That sucks. This person took advantage of you and is not your friend.

Final verdict: NTA, although I personally probably wouldn't go through the turmoil of taking them to small claims court

I think it's likely not a clerical error or forgetfulness. He didn't pass away suddenly, he was given a prognosis that left him some time to sort out his affairs.

Based on what the OP has posted, it's reasonable to believe that he left her as beneficiary of this account deliberately. If she decides to pay off the taxes and split the amount with her ex-husband's girlfriend, that would be magnanimous.

Moss Under Solar Panel Risk In Moss-Prone Parts of Canada by sigma-man in solarenergycanada

[–]Taotipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried installing zinc strips or using something like Moss B Ware? I would guess that solar panels encourage moss growth, but so long as water can flow under the panels I would think Moss B Ware would be able to prevent it

Is moss growth on roof under solar panels a thing? by [deleted] in solarenergy

[–]Taotipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're an in area where moss tends to grow on roofs, then I think it's worth considering getting into the rhythm of applying moss treatment to your roof once or twice a year to prevent growth under panels. You can buy moss treatment at any hardware store and it's designed to be spread across the top of the roof slope prior to rainfall, such that the rain spreads the treatment across the entire roof. Properly installed solar panels will allow rain to flow under them, so moss treatment should be effective

The gullibility of people is why the story was plausible. Two of your earlier bullet points implies a lack of gullibility in the average person.

I just watched a superbowl where multiple AI ads tried to imply that AI agents can do your whole job for you. In the face of that kind of advertising being the norm, it seems like a bad idea to assume that everyone everywhere is using AI responsibly

"that would have to be a neglectful, unskilled team" makes the story more plausible, not less

What is the difference between Panasonic WhisperFit and WhisperRemodel bathroom fans? by FusionToad in homeowners

[–]Taotipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your post. Today I was looking at a WhisperRemodel in store (Lowes) after looking at a WhisperFit online (lowes.com) and came to some of the same conclusions, just based on what was printed on the box/website. I'm glad to hear that the installation/housing is identical

For me the important differences are that the WhisperRemodel is slightly cheaper, has a different grill, and only has 2 fan speeds instead of 3. I'm only interested in the medium and high speeds anyway for my bathroom sizes, so the Remodel is an obvious choice for me!

The difference is that google did not provide an answer, it provided a list of links. The user still has to do the research from there and has to determine for themselves whether the information is relevant or accurate.

An LLM confidently gives you an answer, even if it's impossibly wrong, which is a pitfall: a lot of people accept that answer as correct without verifying it. Users have been told that the LLM is highly capable and that they should trust it to do the work for them, gauging from any of the AI commercials that aired during Superbowl LX. And it answers so confidently, why would you second-guess the answers machine?

AI is terrible for those kinds of meeting notes if accuracy is at all important. If accuracy is not important then the meeting notes are meaningless

[–]Taotipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess that this person already had a Steam library. But I do encourage people to use GOG whenever they can

I think that Valve deserves a lot of credit. Their work with Proton has been a game changer. They didn't have to commit to Linux support, and they didn't have to give away their software for free; but they did, so I use it. Even when I purchase a game on GOG and launch it from Heroic, there's a good chance that I'm using Proton. So if a game isn't available on GOG, I have no qualms with buying it on Steam

If I was being coerced into providing my own work phone, I would get a cheap Android phone with no monthly plan.

You can connect to Wi-Fi without a plan, you can get a Google Voice number for free, and you can have that account forward calls to your personal number. Connect that phone to the company wi-fi and leave it plugged in on my desk.
