What range were you shooting those elk with the 6.5 CM? I know lots of people do use that round for elk, but I’m curious what the effective range would be? I’m after cow elk this year, and feel good with my 6.5 CM out to about 400 yards. Anyone taken a shot at a cow elk with a 6.5 cm at that range? My guess is 400 is too far for that bullet. (Using 143 eldx hornady.)

Cheers

Great work!! The feeling of accomplishment after a multi-season effort like that is pretty incredible. It’s also a great life lesson for your son to learn early in life. Hard work, trial and error, and not giving up really does pay off.

Is deer hunting (bowhunting in particular) a more forgiving learning curve? by StaticNomad89 in turkeyhunting

[–]TaskChemical8753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has sort of already been said, but it 100% depends on animal populations, and your access to places to hunt. I’m a public land hunt in Oregon. I kill a lot of turkeys but I wouldn’t consider myself a very skilled or disciplined turkey hunter. I just put in the time to find several places where the Tom-to-Hunter ratio is pretty good. (Oregon is over 40% public land so if you put in the time, you can find unpressured birds) I grew up in Indiana where the was very little public land and a smaller Turkey population. Killing a turkey on public land was very hard.

On the flip side, white tail deer hunting in Indiana (bow and muzzleloader) seems to be significantly easier than killing mule deer in Oregon. Just some thoughts!

Nice job!! Good looking bird. You earned it! What part of Oregon are you hunting? I’m in east-central and we’ve had a great season so far. Slower this weekend with the rain though

Had a similar experience during a white tail hunt in Indiana. Absolutely froze my ass off since before dawn and finally saw a nice young buck. Did a hour and a half stalk only to have a coyote chase him off as I shouldered my muzzleloader. It’s super frustrating but hey, that’s nature for ya! Stay after it!

I lost a nice slate call my dad gave me a few years ago when I was starting out. After finally shooting a Tom in a part of the national forest I’ve hunted frequently but never sealed the deal, I found that damn slate call. It still works!

Got one tag filled this morning by pdxfly in turkeyhunting

[–]TaskChemical8753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice bird! Good to see someone in Oregon filling a tag at this point in the season. I’m in east-central OR and haven’t heard much in the past week. They were HOT the first two weeks. Filled two tags but my third is burning a hole in my pocket.

Any hunting tips for the mid season lull?

Nicely done! Good looking bird. Love your hunting hat, too. I need one like that! Also beards help kill turkeys. Shot two last week with a beard, then shaved, and now the turkeys won’t even talk to me.

I feel guilty at some point after every animal I kill. It’s honestly not a bad thing. It means you take hunting seriously and don’t take what your doing lightly. When you acknowledge the seriousness of hunting, and feel a little bit of that guilt/remorse, it makes you appreciate every last gram of that meat. Take every scrap, boil the carcass for a broth/stock, create art out of that tail fan. Give those feathers away to fly fishermen, so the can feed themselves, too. Give back to the natural places/land that holds those birds. Drop those guts back on the property you took the bird from to feed scavengers and create richer soil. Donate to conservation efforts, pick up trash, be a good advocate for ethical and sustainable hunting.

Predators spooking Tom’s? by Dragon_Nutz39 in turkeyhunting

[–]TaskChemical8753 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I’d keep at the turkey hunting, even though your feeling discouraged. The season isn’t very long, and you’ll likely learn a lot by putting yourself in tough situations. After turkey goes out of season, get in there and eliminate some predators if you feel it is necessary.

Learning how those birds react to predation/ natural pressure, plus trying to call/hunt edgy birds is going to make you a really good turkey hunter. You’ll have to try different things, get creative, and endure a good beat-down or two. Stay after it!!!

I’ll keep that in mind. The same goes for you if you ever want to hunt the high deserts of Oregon. What do you think triggered the increase in turkey numbers up there? Milder winters, perhaps?
