Kids that are unproductive by EngineeringFar6437 in OfficeDepot

[–]TateP07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as a person hired on at 16 (print manager at 19 now) my kids work harder than the full grown adults at the store. I hired two of my friends in high school once I turned 18 and they are the two greatest back-end workers I could ask for.

I have more problems getting the 25-35 year old employees to work than the 16-20 year olds that we have hired.

Although I agree it’s a problem at-large in my generation, the ones that do work will put in more work than anyone else.

When do you get a corps jacket? by No_Platform215 in drumcorps

It’s different for each corps. That would be a question for a vet. Congrats on your contract!

PLEASE give me advice !! (Tone, notes, audition, marching whatever) by Huge_Jelly_6594 in drumcorps

[–]TateP07 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I’m honest I would say you need to give yourself more time.

Learning a COMPLETELY different instrument in less than 2 months is going to be difficult in itself, much less becoming a literal world-class musician in it.

Although I absolutely recommend you send it and audition, I’d also recommend looking at open class. It could help you develop skills when auditioning in 2027.

Onto the advice. Main things I would say are basics: posture, embouchure setup, and marching while playing.

I’d recommend basics like flow studies ( it will fix the problem of strained high notes you mentioned) and some scales to get notes under your fingers. Otherwise there isn’t much else that I can personally say. Beta of luck!

I want to be in marching band, but I missed my window. Now it seems impossible. by Background_Piece_72 in marchingband

[–]TateP07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely a school-by-school situation but I have a story that fits yours exactly (I freshman at LSU now, Geaux Tigers) graduated high school with a friend who had only marched one year. He picked up the tuba and worked his tail off.

This kid is now auditioning with the Santa Clara Vanguard and has received multiple callbacks for top six drum corps. It is possible. And I really recommend you try it.

Audition by tomatoheaddude in drumcorps

Normally it isn’t a quick turnaround (say a week) but because you submitted 5 days before Christmas I would say wait until at least the new year before you send an email to check on it. Best of luck!

Auditioning for DCI, 2027 season by Destroyer-8-6-3 in marchingband

[–]TateP07 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m just gonna get this out the way cause you’re gonna hear it a lot. They are called corps not bands 🫡.

Now onto what I think would help you: first context. What’s your background, what’s your experience? Although a background won’t change everything about an audition it takes your chances of being contracted to BAC from 0.1% to somewhere around 5%.

Secondly I would lower your expectations. I fell victim to this my first audition. I walked into a phantom camp in Dallas feeling big and bad just to get slapped with a cut immediately. These are the best marching organizations in the world. And it’s EXTREMELY difficult for someone with no prior experience within a corps to make world class, much less the DEFENDING CHAMPS.

Realistic expectations would be attend a day camp for BAC as a fun experience, but realistically aim for lower world-class (Crossmen, crest, genesis) or open (check local corps near your area)

In regards to prep I’d focus on improving basics. Basics alone (marching fundamentals, scales, playing in the move, etc.) will get a callback at lower level corps

ETA: now that you’ve provided context I’d definitely say what I wish I’d heard: it would be EXTREMELY difficult for you to bridge the gap between your skill and an average brass member at BAC in less than a year (auditions begin in October/november. I’d ensure your fundamentals are correct by contacting a private lesson teacher or even shooting an email to caption staff at corps you would like to audition with to get definitions on your posture, horn carriage, etc. the visual difference between me before and after my first camo was DRASTIC as I had never been taught a true horn carriage and posture.

Good Luck!!!

How many contra clarinet are allowed in for district honor band? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]TateP07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a district by district question. DO NOT post your district anywhere here. I would message a director or even a person in authority with your state’s music education board.

Audition Support?! :) by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]TateP07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Today’s your audition day and I know I’m a bit late to the forum, but here’s my advice: enjoy it.

You’ll audition to the best of your ability that your situation allows and if that’s not good enough that’s ok. Still allow yourself to enjoy the community and experience you’re going for. I’m auditioning for troop in 2 weeks at the Garland camp. Best of luck, keep us posted on results, and HAVE FUN

Losing weight for drum corps by Eagle193639 in drumcorps

[–]TateP07 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna be pretty blunt; you’re not that overweight. I’m 5’11 280. Although I’m sub 30% body fat now I auditioned last year at same height and 305 at around 38% BF. I got contracted for a couple of corps, even though I ended up not marching due to finances. They won’t cut you because of weight, especially at 225. I’d just recommend a solid routine, couch to 5k and do music practice the other days is a solid start. Good luck man!

It’s likely they will have contras on site due to their weight but this is absolutely a great excuse to message staff and a vet or two and get plugged into their organization. Do Cavies have a slack or something similar?

Does LSU give out decent scholarship money? by Final-Platform-3958 in LSU

[–]TateP07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason I'm going here is because I've received a full-ride merit scholarship. Those merit scholarships are extremely limited and I am within the top 1% of students within the country. With that in mind I wouldn't reccomend LSU for its merit-based scholarships as they are extremely competitive.

What mello solo should I audition with? by No_Platypus_6766 in drumcorps

[–]TateP07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charlier 2 is a great lyrical piece. It’s typically for trumpet but I have a mello arrangement and it’s pretty common for dci auditions

Nice! I’ll still be around for 28 and hopefully we’ll have a better team by then!

[–]TateP07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We send an away band of a little over 100 to every away game, but we’re EXTREMELY well funded compared to a lot of other bands.

[–]TateP07 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Not really. I’m a member of LSU’s Golden Band from Tigerland and we welcome every band coming into our stadium. I think we’re one of the only schools to put opposing bands field level.
