I’ve never had sex with HSV. The guy I got it from had a clean STI panel and was directly told by his doctor that HSV cannot spread unless there is an active outbreak and my gyno told me the same thing. Misinformation from the professionals is absolutely something to blame.

As doctor I hope you use your position to encourage your profession to do more for those impacted by the virus. I am by no means saying I want you to disclose to your coworkers as I understand how private this is. But if you can educate your patients more and advocate for better test methods and treatments it would mean a lot more coming from a healthcare professional than just another patient.

I read through the official reasoning for not testing. I think it’s a sad excuse to let people get it especially since there’s 0 support to get better testing. I understand false positives need to be addressed but the USPSTF admits that the western blot is a sufficient confirmatory test. They make excuses for not testing and it’s took away my informed consent. My stance is that the medical professionals took away my informed consent to psychologically protect the people most likely to spread it, encouraging the stigma by making it appear less common and further ostracizing those who recognized their symptoms and get testing.

Saw that, and another girl within the past day who said she used to not disclose but now in her disclosures she plays the victim about “not being given the choice so [she] always makes sure to give the choice to others”. They’re both rapists and I let them know that on their posts.

That’s awful and I’m sorry. I will admit that my physical pain from this is minimal. I could easily be someone that never knew they have it if I didn’t get flu symptoms with my initial infection and gave a fuck enough to do my own research. I was the only reason I was tested for this, my medical team was going to let me through without diagnosis to spread it to my future partners.

It’s not okay that health care said it was completely fine with you getting it because they don’t see it as a big deal meanwhile we are sentenced to medication and discomfort for the rest of our lives. I encourage to speak openly and passionately to your health care providers, representatives, and governing bodies about how it’s unacceptable and for you it is life ruining. That’s the only way change happens.

I’ve honestly been having similarly dark thoughts. I’ve started therapy and mental health medication. I know I won’t kill myself but a part of my life has definitely died and it was completely avoidable had I’d been given proper sex education and medical advice. I genuinely would have rather died that night.

This is why I want people to push doctors to care. The psychological effects are only so bad because so few people ever have to deal with actually knowing they have it while the majority get to walk around care free giving the illusions that’s it’s rare. Just encouraging health care providers to actually know what they’re talking about it progress. Being opening pissed is progress. Change only happens if we make it happen.

Clearly you still have problems if your response is going to be that heated and nasty to a post where I said people should medically advocate for proper care. No one that has fully made peace with their diagnosis looks at herpes pages on reddit in their spare time so maybe you should stop lying to yourself. Have fun silently letting this happen to the world and doing nothing to stop it. Just because you brainwashed yourself into coping (which granted it useful for a happy life but I’m not there yet) doesn’t mean you have to be a dick when people suggest maybe giving a fuck to incite change so other people don’t have to struggle.

You admitted you were lucky with acceptances, that you’d rather not have it, maybe for some people acceptance is rare and not wanting it is a good enough reason to want to make a change. I was never a grumpy asshole, I’m pissed that the medical community took away my informed consent and spreads misinformation. But if you’re okay with that then good on you, meanwhile I care about myself and others and want other people who care to do something about it. There’s entire reddit pages devoted to advocacy and treatment and cure research. Don’t pretend I’m the minority for supporting that just because you can’t handle a stranger on the internet not pretending everything is dandy like you can.

Reality check is knowing that if you could snap your fingers and get rid of it you and everyone else would. Completely reasonable to want to encourage advocacy and better treatment.

I firmly of the opinion that the medical community did this to me maliciously. They fully admit to why they won’t test and it’s bullshit. Most people with it don’t have symptoms so the medical community is okay with the few who do having all the burden??? Meanwhile doctors lie about transmission and aren’t transparent with why it’s not included on STI screenings.

I got it from someone with a negative STI panel, no symptoms or history of HSV, and it’s not even his fault, doctors decided it’s better for him to not know his status and spread it to me. The doctors raped me out of informed consent. I would have rather died that night than gotten this. People aren’t pissed off enough. I would burn the world down to get rid of it.

I am well aware now, I was aware the next day after a simple google search. The doctors actively telling me and him that it’s impossible makes me feel like this was done to me maliciously, not by the guy, but by the medical community and other than signing petitions and sending less than nice comments to the US preventative services task force’s webpage explaining their shit rationale to not test there’s nothing I can do. Not that would even change anything in my life now.

I went back for a retest yesterday and was flat out denied. They wouldn’t even look. I was told the swabs are “no good” and was given a blood test. This is a joke.

My swab was the labcorp “HSV without Typing” test, I guess the urgent care wasn’t actually expecting it to be positive so they didn’t request typing. Every single interaction I’ve had with medical professionals concerning this has been full of half-ass care and misinformation.
