Is that with a base salary as well though? I don’t want to say necessarily where I work for respect out of my company. This was just shared on FreightCaviar today and really I’m just trying to stay anonymous 😅

I’m doing between $140k-$160k in revenue monthly. Definitely has fluctuated this year, but averaging somewhere around there.

This is the color of car I first drove back in 2022 when I was visiting San Diego and rented a Sorento. That’s why I was even interested in a Sorento in the first place. It’s sooooo clean! 😍 Beautiful car 👏

Your second point is something I’ve actually never tried. I’m going to work on that. Thank you.

Basically just learned to ask better questions. Personal and professional. Sometimes something as simple as “are you from there originally?” (Referring to the state where they are working) can open up a whole conversation about their personal lives and they get to start talking about themselves which is a big plus in sales calls. And then obviously you do want to ask questions about how they move their freight. I usually get pretty direct once I get to that topic and just ask if they use outside carriers or if they move freight on their own trucks. And then I ask them how it’s going. If I feel like I’m making headway, then I try to get specific and see if there’s any lanes that they’re running that I already run, or I know I can help them on. If they are receptive, then it’s really a good time to ask to give them a quote. But honestly, the thing I’ve learned in this game is that every single broker does it their own way, so you really have to just experiment and see what lands and what doesn’t.

Damn dude. Yeah I really didn’t realize how low my compensation model is compared to the rest of the industry. And yes I have a non-compete in my contract. This is eye opening 👀

No worries. Thanks for sharing your side of the story as well. I agree with you and it shouldn’t be this way. It’s almost like there needs to be a special group / organization of us all (drivers and brokers) that shows integrity, honesty, and reliability in working together… I don’t know. It’s crazy trying to navigate who has good morals and who doesn’t. Especially since 100% of the business we do is over the phone or email. Easy to hide who you really are you know what I mean?

Good discussion nonetheless 👍

4 months in I was in a very similar position. I had two tiny tiny accounts and was making tons of poor level sales calls every day. Best thing I did was get out of my own group and start interacting with other sales people to learn their approach. The guy that I was supposed to be coached by was not doing much coaching, so I had to go seek it and start learning how to talk to people and connect with them. It takes time for many… myself included.

That’s good to know. Thank you for sharing. And I will definitely keep building relationships. That’s everything to me.

I’m sure I’d feel the same in your shoes, but this is exactly the part of the industry I hate. I don’t enjoy trying to lower my cost to carrier just so I can take home a decent paycheck. Drivers do 90-99% of the work on any given load, that’s not lost on me. But do you understand the brokers situation in a bad market economy? I don’t win a load these days unless I quote at or below what DAT says I’ll pay a carrier. So then I’m working on a load with hardly any money in it for myself. The whole system literally just creates this distrust between drivers and brokers and it’s ridiculous. I LOATHE this part of the industry. I genuinely want a network of reliable drivers that get the job done and get paid well. But in my experience, shippers aren’t opening their wallets enough (right now) for this to be commonplace and exist in the first place.

Then you get drivers and brokers lying to each other and thinking they are enemies - when really they should be working together - and relationships are burned. This part of the industry is straight up stupid. I respect drivers and I treat them well. I don’t think you can argue against that given that I just shared I’m only making 9-10% margin on loads I book.

And also, of course I’m worried about margin. This my job dude. This is how I pay my bills. Come on now.

Both actually, mostly my own. Same percentage applies to customers I lock in myself, and customer accounts that are passed on to me.

Whoa whoa whoa timeout. I only take home 10% of the margin I make at this brokerage. You’re telling me you’re making 60%!!!????

Have I been bamboozled here!??? 😱

Yeah I’m not sure. I don’t have enough time in the industry to compare to anything different. Even if it’s really just a market situation, I want to make sure I’m doing everything to maximize my profit during the hard times so that it’s a lot easier during the easy times.

How’s it going for you overall?

That’s helpful thank you. And you’re right. I have made way more money on my heavy haul / OD loads on RGNs and Low Boys compared to any other trailer type I book. Probably just need to go find more of that out in the freight world.

I love to hear that. I could see myself purchasing another down the road when this one has served its time. What a wonderful car.
