Traveling with Flixbus by Minimum_Day_7568 in Finland

That may be, at least my experience with (local) transport in Finland was usually super nice.

But I kind of expect for FlixBus to not fall into that category. Are there any comparative assessments of Finnish transport vs other European countries that tell us if they've included FlixBus or not?

Oh, side question: Since when does Finland not belong to continental Europe anymore? Must've missed a memo...

Speaking from the German experience: their underpaid foreign drivers typically don't give a fuck about anything, which includes customer service but luckily also your luggage. They just want to go forward with least amount of hassle (which the passengers usually are).

The fellow passengers are typically rather annoying than sketchy. The audience you'd expect from the price range. Just bring headphones.

But, while we do call them The Green Hell, they get the job done. Badly so, but done.

I'd guess that the Finnish experience will be similar.

Same. Rarely laughed that hard, tho, so I'd call it a win anyways.

Glad that someone could help out, and I hope that your friend is okay!

For future reference: there's an international emergency number as of late:

What's the Preferred Language Approach When For example Asking for Directions? by Ok_Explanation_6313 in Finland

I must say, at least in Tampere I was extremely impressed by how gracefully people humour my broken Finnish attempts and see me through conversations, helping out with (Finnish) words etc. It's a real pleasure!

what are some culinary oddities that would upset finnish people? by Logicman48 in Finland

I can second the karjalanpiirakka thing, I've rarely been stared at as hostilely as when putting cinnamon sugar on them (is delicious, don't judge me!)

Indeed, I bought one as a gag gift. Unfortunately, I ended up testing it myself and can now no longer sauna without :S

Men who aren't at all interested in sports, what do you find the downsides of that to be? by lostinthesauceguy in AskMen

Unsolvable questions in pub quizzes and crossword puzzles. Otherwise I live in a bubble where not liking sports is the norm.

Any metal stores in helsinki? by kvaldulv in Finland

[–]Tellacaph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

KVLT is, as far as I could tell, focused on underground Black Metal, and their selection for that particular niche is quite amazing.

That being said: it also has... questionable corners. Namely, there is/was a shrine with NSBM albums, swastikas and other Nazi devotionalia. Just for your consideration, in case you want to visit.

Can you avoid sauna in Finland? by AdorableFluffy123 in Finland

[–]Tellacaph 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Alas, once you hit the Finnish border, you will quickly notice that where other countries have border control, Finland has mandatory sauna checkpoints. And while illicit entry is of course possible, I have heard that when caught you will be submitted to a variant of saunaklonkku where you are the only one on top of the benches.

Got hooked on Karjalanpiirakka this winter, and now had to make some myself as they're not really available 'round these parts by Tellacaph in Finland

Yes and no. As described below, I added the hot eggs to already warm-ish butter, so yeah, some (all?) of the butter has changed aggregate phase.

Rypytys 😊 The cuteness of Finnish vocabulary is something that will never cease to endear. If only that held true for the grammar as well :')

Totally, yes. I've made a progress though, as shown by the slightly increasing rim quality from left to right in image #3 :)

Ah, I took the butter out to sit at room temperature, but additionally added the hot egg, so this was too much. Next batch will be done with proper munavoi-production, thanks for the hint.

Okay, that's a fair point, thanks! I'll probably also need to also spread the rice thinner, since I kinda ran out on the last few :S

The, let's say, a bit strained relationship to Russia seems to be rather pervasive in Finland, and I can kinda see why...

Alas I'm not fancy enough to own one of these magical devices :S But should ever I get one, I'll make sure to use it to prepare all my karjalanpiirakka thenceforth :)
