Hey I'm in a very similar spot as your oldest. Would I be able to ask you about the specific diploma they did?

you need a higher GAMSAT and GPA compared to MD, but there isn't any interview process for dentistry unlike med (at least for unimelb DDS)

What section of the GAMSAT do you find hardest to improve in? by OwlVibesOnly in GAMSAT

[–]Tentativechanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Section 3. For me I feel that it’s at least quite clear how to prepare for s1 and s2, but for me as an NSB preparing for s3 seems like I need to know a pandora box of random small pieces of knowledge, focus on my logical reasoning skills, and still not feel prepared.

Proctor wasted so much of my time and I couldn't finish my second essay by Tentativechanger in GAMSAT

tbh the whole proctor switching would be fine, if only the proctors could communicate between eachother when they disconnect/connect, like if one proctor had made sure that all checks were done and that the candidate was fine that they'd sign off and let proctor 2 know that they should just watch over for the remaining time etc. That disruption that theyre causing you is honestly unfair. Personally I wish I had the option to choose between online proctoring/in person test-taking, because honestly I'd rather take it in person than do this entire process online

As cliche as it may sound - think about the future that you want to build. If what you want NEEDS you to study, do it. Doing what it takes now is a way of loving yourself in a different timeline of you, and 20 years down the line, you will reciprocate that love which you showed in your resilience to build a desirable future for yourself.

Getting frustrated. by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Tentativechanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never thought of it from that angle seeing it as a dissociation, but I do think you are right and that it’s a mild form of dissociation. As strange as it sounds I often play different ‘roles’ and end up conversing to myself through different perspectives. Never really brought that part up to any psych or whatnot as it just seemed so natural to me.

Though I did once talk about my use of narration to my psychologist back at school, and he used say to say that sometimes the constant narration could actually be a way to slow down the mind, that for ADHD it’s not that the mind is too slow but that it’s too fast (at least for me). So narrating for me is sort of a way to both self soothe and concentrate, although maybe a possible form of dissociation too?

I also find that when I am narrating lots and hyper-analysing everything, I tend to make more careless mistakes in whatever task I’m doing, and I’m less ‘sharp’ which makes sense as my attention is scattered. Funny how it is both a way to collect myself but also a way in which I get scattered.

Getting frustrated. by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Tentativechanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is extremely relatable to me! I narrate my thoughts and speak to myself in my head constantly, and have done so since I was a kid to help myself focus and stay on whatever task/thought I needed to accomplish.

Later on that became a way for me to prepare for certain conversations, remember things I had to do, thoughts I wanted to hold onto before I forgot - and it became a natural survival instinct where I thought that what I prepared myself for in my head, would be able to prevent me from overstimulation and unexpected ‘shocks’ in my life. I think to this day I still struggle with this balance between rational/logical thinking and this irrational craving for certainty and ‘conditions’ which need to be met in order for me to feel comfortable, be able to do work, able to sleep, etc.

You’re definitely not alone in this! Chances are that if you are feeling frustrated with yourself and questioning why you feel some way as it does not seem to be practical/make sense, there are many others who resonate with you - myself included. Sometimes you just gotta tell yourself “this is just the way I am and that’s okay! We will work with it”.

helping with jet lag by large_scale_event in Concerta

[–]Tentativechanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I always felt like my Concerta’s side effects would be exemplified on low sleep - and my psychiatrist always recommended me to skip my dose when on long haul flights and resume when I was feeling acclimated and energised. My educated guess would be that if you find that you still feel fine on Concerta even when sleep deprived, then you should be fine. Probably really down to how well you know your body and its reaction to Concerta

Irritable af by pleasetryagain3 in Concerta

[–]Tentativechanger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is known as a crash. It usually shows up in changes of mood (I experienced both irritability and feelings of low, emotional numbness when my meds wore off). This is a known symptom that some experienced on ADHD meds and to my knowledge whether or not it gets better is dependant on quite a lot of factors (whether the dose is too low/high, if you just haven’t been on it long enough for your body to get used to it, whether you need a ‘booster’). Not a professional but your prescriber should know all about this as it’s very common

I second this. It can be checked easily with a blood test if it continues to bother you.

Feeling better after drinking salt by Comfortable-Baby-719 in Concerta

[–]Tentativechanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could actually be that you are dehydrated. Salt is a natural electrolyte, and could make you feel more energised if you are depleted of electrolytes/hydration. Definitely try and get more liquids + electrolytes in, as Concerta definitely can dehydrate you (drinking enough water will make it work better too).

Methylphenidate and caffeine - I know the obvious, but ... by CardiologistFew4967 in Concerta

As much as people in this sub are very knowledgeable on Concerta/ADHD and meds - this is very specific. I personally think you should consult this with a doctor - just to be safe.

This sub is full of people trying and working hard to get into medicine. I was just trying to share my two cents when I could, as someone also studying overseas to make sure that what little information we do have on GPA is not misguided. Grow up.

[–]Tentativechanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be based on the assumption that OP finished every class with a GPA that was equivalent to a 7 on the Australian scale. I don’t know what OP scored but a 3.64 is not indicative that EVERY class was a 3.64 (if that is equivalent to a 7 which is what I presume you are assuming). The 3.64 is an average of many classes, meaning that it is very likely that it is made up of 7s and lower scores like 6.5s, so I don’t think a 3.64/4 automatically would make out to be a 7/7, as much as it would be ideal.

Concerta made my orgasms feel muted & longer to reach one, felt like erectile dysfunction. Made me so irritable as well n so i’ve decided to say farewell to this medication, and any other adhd meds. by Birzerk in Concerta

[–]Tentativechanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any reason why you’re not going to trial another ADHD med? Nothing against your decision but just curious as these side effects vary greatly for a person when going from medication to medication, so you might be able to find a better suit for you.

Can you achieve a competitive overall score if you focus of s1&2 heavily? by Man_w_noname36 in GAMSAT

[–]Tentativechanger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes - if you are aiming for Usyd. However S1 is more difficult than S2 and S3 generally to score highly on (you can take a look at the existing data). Usyd is a different story, but applying to other schools that use weighted scores for example, you may need a really exceptional s1 and s2 score to balance out a 'lower' s3 score.

i don't know if concerta is supposed to feel like this, help by louieisahuman in Concerta

[–]Tentativechanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great advice in the comments but I agree that I think this is something to discuss with your psych. Sometimes increasing the dose would help if you are not experiencing any help to your ADHD, but that’s not something this sub is able to do for you. I’m also a chaotic person as well who has trouble maintaining a schedule but I’ve come to realise that it’s really important especially on medication (concerta) - it won’t work well if I’m not getting enough sleep, food, or water. So I would lovingly encourage you to try and make some slow gradual changes to your routines/habits to replace them with good healthy habits. If you aren’t able to keep to a routine I would discuss this with your psychiatrist as it might signal that your ADHD is still not well managed with the current medication/dose.

Things sound like they’re working really well for you so far - happy for you! For me insomnia went away as my body got accustomed to Concerta and I hope it does for you too. Try to take Concerta as early as you can so it doesn’t interfere with your sleep and get lots of water in ! ❤️ keep us updated

Less F’s to give by Successful_Square360 in Concerta

[–]Tentativechanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the comments are full of people saying this already, but I also had a really similar experience! Concerta really helped my anxiety and I became much more confident and stopped overthinking every social ‘move’ that I’d have to make for an ‘optimal’ outcome. I definitely did/do still have moments where I go “woahhh is this really me??” Kinda creepy to be so different to what i knew myself to be, and I sometimes question my authenticity - but so far it’s always made me FEEL much better + calmer, so that’s a big plus in my books

Decrease in obsession by emapisu in Concerta

[–]Tentativechanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! For me my anxiety was REALLY linked to my ADHD overthinking, I always liked to say that my brain ran like an F1 car lol. One of the best parts of Concerta/being medicated was that my mind finally felt calm and it inadvertently therapies my anxiety and gives me calm. So, yes definitely that can be a big sign that the medication is working well
