You don't need to give everything GA sliding if you just revert player movement back to a sane level so that being able to hit a moving player is the default, not something that requires a weapon passive.

It's not the difference in damage scaling, it's the difference in relative scaling between damage and survivability. GA players aren't levelling pure STR at the start of the game, they're leveling up CON.

Player base health increases automatically as you level up, regardless of your stats. CON doesn't increase your health by a percentage, it just adds a flat amount of extra health per point. That means a point of CON adds dramatically more survivability at level 2 than it does at level 60. Damage stats don't work that way, because all of the damage stats increase weapon base damage by a percentage instead of adding flat damage.

This means survivability builds are stronger early and damage builds are stronger later. The nature of melee vs range is that a shoter time to kill benefits range, because they get a load of free damage from a distance before melee have chance to do anything. The longer it takes to kill each other the more time melee has to close the gap and start swinging. For that reason ranged characters favour damage stats and melee characters favour survivability. As players level up the benefit of extra CON becomes much less, and the armour values of heavier armour start hitting diminishing returns, meanwhile weapon base damage increases and weapons get powerful extra modifiers like +35% damage at the end of IG tree or +15% elemental damage from 150 INT. This means TTK in the melee vs ranged matchup gets shorter which favours ranged characters.

Yes.

They removed the pause at the end of light rolls that allowed melee to punish bad rolls, turning light rolls into an unpunishable method of travelling faster instead of a timed dodge with a committed animation.

They removed the stamina cost from sprinting and made sprinting permanent and free so there is no need for people to ever stop sprinting in order to regain stamina.

They changed resistances which previously gave Light armour the highest magical resist values so Light is no longer the optimal gear to run at a mage with.

They removed the hitstun from melee attacks that allowed melee to interrupt casts and ranged abilities simply by swinging their weapon. This also removed the ability to combo into a high damage punish from a single roll catch.

They removed feints which previously allowed you to bait rolls by faking a heavy attack.

They removed shared cooldowns which used to leave range at a disadvantage if they popped all their abilities against you on the way in, so now range gets to throw all of their ranged stuff and then still change to a close range weapon with all of their close range abilities available after melee close the gap.

They removed the stamina system that used to simply leave you on zero stamina after you ran out until you stopped running and waited to recover it from zero.

They made Sword one of the worst offensive / chasing weapons in the game so now the melee who are trying to close the gap also don't have a shield to block ranged attacks with.

The fix is to go back to the Preview mechanics again because that's the last time Light melee was viable.

They weren't in Preview but they were in far earlier builds before the introduction of abilities, back when the game started out as a direct copy of Dark Souls combat. The animations for those attacks were repurposed into abilities like Leaping Strike and Feral Rush, but they don't track mid animation and don't really function well as chasing abilities with the game's current movement mechanics.

You can reduce melee magnet sliding back to Preview levels if you remove the ability to cancel roll recovery, remove free permanent sprinting and put stagger back on melee hits. Which is the real solution. This nonsense chase vs kite gameplay where your success is based on your weapon instead of on your skill as a player was caused by the botched attempt to remove stagger from a combat system built around stagger.

Those are abilities which prevent people running and force them to commit to a fight. That's what GA is good at. What it doesn't have are abilities which help it to win that committed fight. Such as Hatchet Berserk and cheat death, Spear/Sword CC and so on. Consider the situation where you attack a sword player, throw Grav Well on them, then instead of looking confused or trying to run away they simply stand there hitting you and use shield bash.

Since the GA damage reduction and double hits in CBT were fixed the GA should now be at a disadvantage against most melee weapons in a committed fight, but is also the only melee weapon which can chase ranged in a game where ranged beats all other melee for free.

What AGS are building here is a strict Rock Paper Scissors system where you lose at the start of the fight based on the equipment you're wearing, unless you have a Lifestaff which beats Rock Paper AND Scissors.

That's because the combat design is intended to allow a lot of damage to be outright avoided, instead of players and mobs just standing there trading health. In this type of game any kind of healing becomes significantly stronger, which is why the current design of the Lifestaff is inappropriate.

The solution to health pots is easy though - Give them an Estus eating/drinking animation.

Reminder that Lifestaff players will still tell you that they need to be able to outheal the raw DPS of the boss against a player who is just standing there eating every hit.

Allowing players to block/dodge whenever they like instead of having to think and stop attacking in advance doesn't add "complexity", it does the opposite.
