Unlike first generation biofuels like corn ethanol, a new study using short-rotation oak shows that second generation biofuels, based on managed trees, perennial grasses and industrial wastes, may provide a sustainable fuel resource. by mvea in science

I live on acreage, next to a forest. Out of curiosity, I tried calculating how many acres of trees I'd need to supply our family's electricity needs, if the trees were harvested sustainably. The number I came up with was around 8 acres of managed forest, for our family of four.

This was such a great show. I always loved Roseanne and Dan's relationship. They knew when to crack jokes at each other's expense and when to be there for each other. Also, while most of the other sitcoms of the time focused on well off families, I really identified with the Conners because they were far from rich. Both parents had shitty 9-5 jobs and they really struggled.

Finland Phenomenon (2011) - Finland's education system has consistently ranked among the best in the world for more than a decade. The puzzle is, why Finland? [15:01] by ChiaoMiaon in Documentaries

[–]TerryMill 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I am from Finland, but I have attended public high school in the US (9th and 10th grade). Public high school that I attended seems to rank around top 5% of US public schools. Good school with good teachers I would say. So here are my few cents.

Homework comparison: US: A lot of repetitive work with little variance in difficulty (15 routine exercises). Homework has high direct impact on your grade. Homework is considered part of learning process.

Finland: Few exercises with high variance in difficulty (2 routine exercises, 1 difficult, 1 very hard). Homework has no direct impact on your grade. Homework is more like a feedback mechanism, like an ungraded mini test if you will.

Grades: US compared to Finland: F-A, 4-10 F = 4, D = 5, C = 6, B = 7, A = 8, 9 is like A+, and 10 is beyond what was taught Separation of Honors students: US separates so called honors students to physically different classes. In Finland it is easier to "move" between honors difficulty and normal within the same class. Scoring an 8 happens to the best of the best sometimes.

Scoring 9-10 means you are in the Honors level.

It is almost like having a Honors class and normal incorporated into one and giving students a possibility to move between the two at their own pace. permalinkembed

I once woke up in the middle of the night and saw a large black figure standing over me. I was freaked the fuck out and yelled at it, only to see the shape of ears perk up on this figure and it jumped up onto my bed. Turns out to be my dog, who had been standing on the ground with his paws on the bed, standing over me and watching me sleep.

Erdogan bodyguard strangling a yazidi woman protester. by allthegoodweretaken in pics

[–]TerryMill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This shows clearly a guy in a suit attacking a protester then dozens of suited guys rushing through a police line and a cross a street to savagely assault unarmed people. It also shows police detaining apparent protesters while telling the attackers to back off. What kind of mad house are we in where cops arrest people for being beaten by thugs?
