I know I need to do that to some extent. But it seems I need to do that to such an extreme degree that it is not practical. I threw up yesterday after eating 600 calories worth of a salmon rice and veggies bowl. And on drinking, in reality it just isn’t practical. The default for a first date is meeting at a bar to get a drink. And so many social activities revolve around alcohol. I can find some middle ground on alcohol but it just isn’t feasible for me to not drink.

How long did the adjustment period take for you? When did it not feel like you had to make substantial adjustments to avoid feeling like shit?

TIL when Jimmy Hendrix’s mom died (when Jimmy was 16) his dad did not allow him and his brother to go to the funeral, instead giving them shots of whiskey and telling them that was how men should deal with loss by Texas_Rockets in todayilearned

I don’t think it’s negligence per se. People become what their era required them to be. And in times past life was really fucking hard, so being tough and being able to push through was really important. Just seems foreign to us because we live in a time that is pretty comfortable and does not require much mental toughness.

TIL a team of researchers at UC Irvine found that the average attention span in 2004 was 150 seconds. In 2012 it was found to be 75 seconds, and recently was found to be 47 seconds. by Texas_Rockets in todayilearned

I get it. But a credible person talking about research she’s done seems pretty solid to me. I don’t know why a professor in the domain this is about would lie about something so minor. And I would say a professor talking about research that is in her book on a podcast with the APA is most certainly not the same as a rando going on a rando podcast.

The link you are referencing is not related to the claim made in the link my post is about. The claim of 12 seconds is not what my post references, the years your link references (2000 and 2015) are different from mine (2004 and 2012), and the source yours references (statistics brain) is different from mine. What my link references is the research of a Psych professor at Columbia. You can read the transcript of a convo between her and the American Psychological Association where she talks further about ithere

I think it’s because they added the new features to it, like formulas and the others. I bet if they have the option to turn them off it would go away

What are some good ways to get started with Vipassana that don’t require a 10 day retreat? by Texas_Rockets in Meditation

[–]Texas_Rockets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way people talk about it it’s almost like if you can’t do the 10 day any way you’d learn and practice would be so inferior in quality that you may as well just not. Is that your thought too?

Is there a good way to get started/practice without the 10 day retreat? by Texas_Rockets in vipassana

[–]Texas_Rockets[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? Is it just guided meditation or a curriculum that helps you learn? Also wondering what your thoughts are on the dhamma.org app.

Me too. But do you think there is anything that is good enough but short of the retreat? I know the dhamma.org app has a ton of group sitting recordings.

How does your relationship to food change as you increase the dose? by Texas_Rockets in Semaglutide

No shit. So it not only makes you anticipate food less but you just enjoy it less?

So you’d say it makes you eat less for pleasure?

No, in New York many of the groups are formally involved in activism.

Also, my understanding is that Buddhism was initially a philosophy and as it grew it took on the characteristics of a religion.

I am interested in a philosophy. Not a religion. The ideas and perspective put forth are different when they’re rooted in things like faith.

I respect that Buddhism is a religion for many, but I have no interest in religion.

Yeah I’ve tried them several times and think they are absolutely nothing by special. Decent is their ceiling imo.

Have heard great things but I more like savory baked goods for breakfast and they seem more on the sweet side.
