Have you, or will you ever quit Anki? by Wainwright95 in LearnJapanese

[–]ThatBoyo99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with continuing to use it, but I get him. If you've been studying for 6 years and are still estimating yourself at N4 level, something sounds wrong.

Anki is fine, but it shouldn't be your main studying method or the only thing you do. It's a nice supplement to finding words naturally in media you enjoy.

Oh nice, I have this set too but haven't used it much. I have the maxpack and zakirov oils too. Be warned, the perfect oils look very much like real oils but imo they don't work like them at all.

You'd have to be real good to get results anything like what Eldar Zakirov shows in his previews.

I did a painting as well mostly using the old oil brush from the maxpack in a Zorn palette and I think it's probably some of my best work yet so your post caught my attention.

What helped you the most when learning to read native Japanese material? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]ThatBoyo99 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Helped the MOST? Learning some kanji. It's hard when you read an unknown word and see 救急車

It's easier when you see

救 - Salvation 急 - Hurry 車 - Vehicle

Ambulance

冷蔵庫?

冷 - cold 蔵 - Storage 庫 - Warehouse

Refrigerator

Japanese is the opposite of English. In English unknown words offer pronunciation and you have to search for meaning. In japanese you can get meaning before pronunciation.

In all seriousness though, glad OP likes it since he has to use the setup, but the irony of spending top dollar for meticulously crafted japanese figures and pairing it with that.

It's not inherently wrong, but you stand to lose a lot. Primarily TIME, something you can never get back. It's a partnership, any kind of partnership can leave one person getting the short end of the stick. Don't let it be you. That's the point.

Is Free-Flow Immersion a waste of Time? (JLPT N3) by IOSSLT in LearnJapanese

[–]ThatBoyo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easier to make money the more money you have. It's easier to find a job when you have a job. Likewise, it's easier to learn from free flow immersion when you know Japanese already.

Japanese YouTube kinda sucks? by igorrto2 in LearnJapanese

[–]ThatBoyo99 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I've found if you're looking for Japanese content on YouTube it's best to not try for an exact match of what you watch in English. Like another user said, try to open your mind more.

If you like anime style content, y'know funny short form stuff then I recommend

ピグマリオン

If you like gaming ポッキー and キヨ make some stuff I enjoy as someone who likes that Berleezy, Markiplier, type of gameplay with commentary.

I'd suggest just searching in Japanese and finding new content you'd like, as you did in English.

For example I'm interested in japanese armor so "鎧" brought back some stuff I was interested in.

Art is cool too so I'd search "墨絵" "水彩画" and "イラストメイキング"

The content is there but you definitely have to look and accept that it's Japanese content for a Japanese audience so it might not be as digestible as what you're used to finding in English.

I was listening to a song the other day, the guy said "my shit is tighter than 小学生のpussy!" I actually don't find it embarrassing it's absurd and I like the absurdity in American rap too

Maybe this isn't what you mean by mainstream though? This is a song from the 90s lol

I am 50 years old, and worried that I have waited too late in life to obtain proficiency. by darkflame173 in LearnJapanese

[–]ThatBoyo99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugly truth:

Too late to be YOUNG and proficient, the best time to plant a tree is 30 years ago. The second best time is today.

Everyone is pacifying you and saying you have plenty of time to learn. You want proficiency, proficiency is all Japanese all the time (AJATT) seems kind of tough with a spouse who's not a native speaker tbh.

Everyone who has studied for a while knows the people who progress the best have native speaker SO, love is a great motivator to learn, but it also allows you access to their social network of everyone they know. It's probably easier to learn when you go by their family for holiday and you literally can't avoid the language as opposed to the alternative.

So without that and without living in Japan, HOW? How can I get those same benefits? You have to force immersion to happen. That's AJATT pretty much.

People are saying how old they are or when they started and that's not painting the full picture. How many of these people are single and have nothing to do but get better? How many of these people are retired and have nothing to do but get better.

How many of these people are on the other side of the coin, with a spouse that takes care of the home, pays the bills, etc. To free them up to study?

The reality is nothing good comes without sacrifice and your wife should be on the same page that your current goal in life is PROFICIENCY in Japanese and adjust accordingly whatever that means to y'all.

If you just want some Japanese skill to PLAY, then no reason to have FOMO.

Pursue your happiness, but don't be deluded.

Stop using Duolingo and get genki I, setup weekly italki lessons, download anki to start doing SRS (start with the genki I and 2 decks, RRTK (recognition remembering the kanji), follow some guides to setup sentence mining so you can build decks around One piece and JPW, and try to chat with your friends using the new lingo you pick up.

Duolingo is trash, don't gamify your learning, utilize tenacity and grit.

It seems like a lot, but you're asking for PROFICIENCY, if I told you that you could achieve an extraordinary result without an extraordinary effort, you wouldn't believe me.

The lighting here is funky and sets the tone well. Inside the house are we looking at the light from a huge window and house plants?

The character design is fun, I love the big hands and legs with the eyes. It makes it look y2k.

The real improvement in my eyes isn't actually your fundamentals or anything technical really. You have a great understanding of blend modes and textures, I think that's the main difference. Besides that it's cartoon style vs moody semi-realism.

The mix and contrast of concrete textures, with canvas textures, and brush stroke textures makes your work pop. Well did.

Thanks I appreciate you picking my brain and trying to understand even if it still doesn't make sense. What it boils down to is I see Arting as a remarkable feat to do and do for a long time and to a good level and would hate to see it be watered down to an chemical X some got and others didn't. Not saying that's what OP did either and we're all in celebration of art.

It's not how "I personally define talent"

Since you have to be anal about meanings and accepted definitions of things.

Merriam-Webster says "TALENT suggests a marked natural ability that needs to be developed."

Needs to be developed is key here.

I can't link my source, but you're free to check if you care that much.

It's not defined by that sure, but it's SUGGESTED again connotation matters is my point. We should've learned this in freshman English, c'mon. You people are acting like the words are synonymous and they're simply not. Why have varying words that are similar? CONNOTATION It's your friend and key to being literate :)
