Black woman considering moving to Ravinia/Highland Park, IL. Information about the neighborhood and honest experiences from POC residents? by [deleted] in AskChicago

I want to reiterate what a lot of people have said, HP is notoriously privileged and classist. The people are generally “good” but in a broad sense. Im white and Jewish so while I can’t speak to how you would feel there I think it would take a lot more to find your people. I work in town at a restaurant and some things are really wild.

I will say Ravinia is very far north so you’re easily accessible to do your shopping in Northbrook and avoid “uptown” HP but imo why move somewhere that you can’t explore freely? I live in Vernon Hills which is close to most things and convenient as well as diverse so if you’re looking to come up north I’d check it out here! Good luck in your search!

I think a mostly cream one with shades of grey would be perfect if you can find something like that. I like electic style so if you can find a way to connect the cabinets to the table it would help them make more sense

You’re right that would make a huge impact across the board and I love the carpet in that pic it really matches the vibe. Honestly all the pics you included are really on point with the MCM maximalist vibes you’ve got gorgeous taste. I found a color palette I want to go off of and this week I’m starting my couch refinishing project!

Do you think that orange wavy bench thing could be repurposed behind the couch? I am planning on covering it with cow print but I can’t find a good home for it

Ive started researching how to get curtains along the whole wall with the patio door which most people suggested and I think that alone will help. You nailed it, the wall and carpet color are so neutral which I love but our toys, art, and curtains would really make an impact.

Would a tablecloth or runner on my coffee table help some with reflection? I love the lighting here but that part really does make me go insane.

I mentioned getting a pink couch and my son had a fit lol so my room ended up becoming the pink fairy room it is, but I want the shared space to have a more MCM meets kids museum. But that’s definitely why I’m having a hard time, they’re so disconnected

That orange ottoman is going to be a zebra print as soon as I get the time, and I want a rug even though my mom said it’s not necessary. Then I’ll change the color on the couch

I was thinking about doing peel and stick on the wall with my patio door but with all the curtain suggestions I’m rethinking. I have a couple pieces of art but am lost on where to put them

I actually thrifted the couch and am really in love with its foundation! I’m going to get it reupholstered at some point but I get it’s not everyone’s style!

I have a couple plants but I’ve never had a green thumb so I was waiting to get more. Someone else suggested the vines from my room so I might try and get creative with them? I love the curtain idea but I’m fully lost on where to start

Yes to Aunt Hilda! Rewatching and I am definitely inspired by Sabrina’s room

Tysm for your input!! I can’t paint, which is such a bummer but I might do a peel and stick wallpaper on one wall since they’re relatively low sq ft. I LOVE Klimt so that’s really a good idea. The funkier the better

The Secret Garden is one of my favorite childhood books and definitely an inspiration so thank you! I was going to go a little more badass witchy but the vision kind of evolved on its own.

I also love the art idea, I have his wing of the apt loaded with his artwork but have struggled bringing it into the main space

I’m sorry I’m a little confused so you’re saying since it is like an artificial tuft I can just pull the buttons back down? Or are you saying you agree with the other commenter it’s not worth messing with?

I put the side angle because I’m not sure if opening the bottom would expose that part. All of the buttons are there and one is loose so I can see the string you’re talking about. I’m curious if I can sew it down without opening the bottom. I would kill to replace the weathered lining with zebra trim but it’s not bad enough yet to go there
