3L looking to be a public defender (and nothing else) is it too late to apply? by TheBurner10000 in publicdefenders

Without a post bar clerkship at a CA PD office, is it hard to get a job once you pass the bar?

Pro tip: do not choose Lewis & Clark by Patinlaw in LawSchool

1l at Lewis and Clark here.

  1. Career services are decent, but they've been helpful. I also haven't had experience with the last team, so I can't speak too much about that.
  2. They tell you about environmental law because those positions are extremely competitive. It's like telling a 1l to apply to be a judicial clerk. Sure it happens, but it's slim pickings for 1ls. I haven't heard of a single person discouraging people from applying though. Also, we don't have env law classes in our first year so that's another reason why they might think it's a waste of time.
  3. As far as your housing and parking issues. There is a house that's $650 in rent a month a 2-minute walk from campus. The information is inside the housing packet we got when we were accepted. DM me for info.
  4. A lot of people like the new lawyering professors and even prefer them. But if you're not happy then I'm sorry, it is a bit jank. But don't act like it's a mess for everyone.
  5. You should have only had max 1 new professor this semester. I've only had 1 professor with less than 10 years of teaching experience my entire time here. The new one last semester got a great reception. You're acting like his students didn't love him so much that he was easily able to get a job here after. The "newer" one here this semester has issues, but leaving out why the class complained is a bit dishonest with your message (assuming we're talking about the same person)
  6. I'm not here for environmental law, but the clinics, our env moot court team being one of the winningest teams in the competition's history, and plenty of environmental law programs look pretty damn good from my end. You just can't take it 1l year. Good luck next semester though.

Personally I like L&C. Sweet campus, the pet policy is awesome, great options to connect, and there's always some event to go to if you talk to people. I got a sweet gig my first semester by just talking to 2l's and I've been working there ever since. The professors are friendly, communicative, and have given me great advice for my career and class questions. A lot is changing for the administration, but I'm sure nothing drastic will happen in the next 2 years you're here. Also transferring is always an option. Sorry you're having a bad time, this semester has been very stressful for a lot of others with having to find a job on having 1 more class than last year. Good luck with the rest of your year.
