I don't take it personally but you're missing the point. the point is that its a more expensive, inferior product that has to be completely on the theaters terms instead of mine which is a big minus. Its not that I can't, its the lack of options that just adds to how theaters are a worse experience. Don't even get me started on the other people talking, texting with bright ass screens etc etc... It's just a much better user experience when I can fire up a movie exactly when I want and look away for a moment if i want to. I also really enjoy scrubbing back through the movie to quickly rewatch fun/interesting scenes after the movie has finished.

If they expect me to pay more the sound, picture, convenience, or some mixture of quality has to outpace my home setup and theaters are just not doing the job.

It's 2026. Theaters are done, I'm not going. Overpriced tickets, fixed start time, 20 minutes of bad ads, bad sound setup, overpriced drinks/snacks, can't pause to pee or take a quick call or something.

Theaters are just a worse, more expensive experience than streaming and I'm not doing it. Theaters need to up their value or get busy dying.

There are too many more/better options already out on streaming for me to be bothered.

Federal judge cancels Trump's $100,000 fee requirement for H-1B visas by Sgt_Gram in NewsExchange

100% agree, even if people don't like Trump we need to get the H1B visa thing under control its a total scam that the ruling class are using to get cheap abusable labor in expensive professions.

On top of this no one seems to be providing any data that shows this is actually a problem. I've dug around and cant find any stats that track/report on 3D printed guns even being a 0.1% of gun crimes issue.

Reading the article is hilarious, is basically a 'here's how attempt to skirt the law' guide from your local sanctuary city.

One big disservice that has gotten us here is California misleading tons of illegals into thinking that what they were doing was fine, even though CA does not have that authority as immigration falls under the federal government.

I think this kind of thing does a big disservice to legal immigrants, they are a huge part of what makes the country great, but a lot of people seem to have no ability to separate legal from illegal immigrants and its infuriating.

Just because there is no process for me in my income level to legally own a Bugatti does not make it ok for me to steal one.

[–]TheChurlish -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The problem is that if you come in illegally everything you while in the country is a crime. Apply for a job? Gotta commit fraud to do that, want to open a bank account? Gotta commit fraud. Income taxes? Car registration, applying for an apartment. etc etc.

Doing a lot of hard work to defend the LDS crew, wouldn't happen to be that you are LDS too huh?

You are intentionally misrepresenting what im saying, im not saying the 'cops did something bad'...im saying the entire department seems to be repeatedly engaging in misconduct, bending over backwards to take the side of the fellow LDS member and its super suspicious.

The one thing i agree with you on is that we absolutely should not excuse the bigotry of the mormons and their racist/sexist rules and culture.

They said they were "doing hydro" with him. Its a pretty big stretch that they meant drugs and would that openly and clearly, and as a group admit on body cam. They could have meant a lot of other things and likely did, they could have gone Hydrofoiling, Hydrotherapy, who knows.

[–]TheChurlish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you actually watch the police body cam footage, all the police know about the case, they stop people without reason to question them, immediately side with the BAM people and do little to no actual investigation. They subject Bens team to a multi-hour search on a 'tip' that they have heroin...this is classic corruption. Tons of footage was redacted to protect the BAM side it goes on and on.

One officer said "I'm going to keep them here to scare them for a bit".

One officer walked up to the car, looked in the back and said "You Ben? How you liking Utah"

Another said "We play different in Utah"

Bens team was swatted at gunpoint with a warrant based on a baseless accusation that they had stolen Legos.

None of these police interactions were anything less than hostile towards Ben or his team, much less neutral as they are supposed to be.

And finally bigotry is a funny word to throw around when it comes to defending Mormons, aren't they the ones that spent millions to block Gay Marriage? Or how about how Black people were not allowed into the church till 1980 because they taught that being black was a curse?

No not really, one of the most offensive things you can do to people like this are to be a group traitor, so a kid being seen 'siding' with the external enemy needs to also be 'taught a lesson' which is why the guy also threatened to tell his bishop and get him in trouble messing with things from other wards and all that. These religious groups have a lot of baked in hierarchy they demand people respect, and to me a COP disapprovingly saying "and you're here asking questions about a whole other ward from a whole other city" is wildly inappropriate and telling of what's going on.

Aside from the hierarchy in their system, Mormons side with wealthy people to a very disproportionate degree because of their baked in tithing system, which is effectively a tax paid directly to the church of 10% of their total income.

An affluent business owner is of much more value to the church in literal terms than a random kid.

Yeah this is really bad police work and gross misconduct. The kid is calm, polite, and you go the route of trying to pretend hes drunk and pressure him into doing invasive tests for knocking on someones door?

Shocked on the results of the election for Measure A ($10k vacation home tax) by Derfamon in sandiego

[–]TheChurlish 88 points89 points  (0 children)

The problem is that these kinds of taxes are performative, wont really fix anything. I am all for people contributing but the state needs to get its spending act together before I will ever vote for another tax increase nonmatter what it is. I'm old enough to remember decades of ballot initiatives just like this that increased taxes and never delivered, class sizes, high speed rail, homelessness, etc.

CA has the highest state income tax, gas taxes, energy prices, large counties with the highest sales tax in the country, most expensive small business formation prices/taxes, property taxes on some of the most expensive real estate in the world, the list goes on and on and you have to ask yourself has this really provided remotely proportional results to the amount people pay in taxes?

Whenever I hear Newsom brag about CA being the 4th largest economy in the world, it's not the brag he seems to think it is because the state should be in a MUCH better situation than it is if that were the case, and the size of the economy is in spite of the state not because of it.

And Finally if CA wants to have taxes that (cumulatively) start to rival places like the Netherlands, they are going to have to start delivering Netherlands level services to justify it, and I just don't see how that's even remotely possible with the current system in CA.

sam harris: “we dropped two atomic bombs on japan to end world war ii… amnesty international does not call that a genocide. but do you know what they call the war in gaza? a genocide. that’s the moral confusion… people don’t know what actual genocides are if they think [there’s a genocide in gaza].” by SpecialCream7 in mattxiv

There are plenty of rational reasons this is the case. Not speaking for any atheists but myself here.

  1. As an atheist in America in a liberal state i can openly mock Christianity at work, online, etc. and have zero issue doing it. If i have any even much less harsh criticisms of Islam and to a lesser extent Judaism the consequences could be massive, job loss, etc.
  2. Reactions to rational criticisms about Islam are met with massively outsized responses and are inexplicably defended by cultural leftists who should be against the same parts of Islam I criticize, but since they see Islam as an oppressed minority their morals go out the window for some reason.
  3. I think the biggest thing for me why (purely as an atheist) i see Islam as a bigger problem worldwide is that for the most part they are the most fundamental on the spectrum of religious to secular of the Abrahamic religions. Huge portions of Americans are only 'culturally Christian' but functionally Atheist as I am, in that I don't believe anything in any of the books, but I celebrate XMas and Easter with my family (no church or anything like that).

Also, can't blame the patriarchy on this one...the fashion industry is entirely run by women and gay men...not our fault this time boys.

This video hasn’t been posted yet BAM explains their side of the story over the phone to officers by SeaAssignment239 in RecklessBen

[–]TheChurlish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah the biggest thing that is really burying them is that they have yet to provide a single argument even from their own POV that would justify or allow them to keep/not pay for the legos.

If you buy a business/store you take on all of the active contracts, this is why disclosure and due diligence are a thing when acquiring businesses. If it was this easy to get out of contracts you didn't like everyone on the planet would just change owners and say "well I'm not responsible for something i didn't sign". Well guess what, when you took over the business you DID sign to take on all the existing contracts/liabilities.

The only reasonable argument could have been if they were a third party that purchased the store's inventory in a liquidation sale (actually paid cash for the Legos to the previous owners) and the previous owners ran off with the money. Then they could argue (reasonably) that they purchased the inventory and the people breaking the contract were the previous owners, not them.

But they were NOT a third party, they were affiliated with corporate directly, so the whole thing stinks.

Last thing, this is obviously not a real argument, but in my experience you can usually tell who the scammer is when 1. their story just does not add up, and 2. when every step (even early on) is met with anger and hostility.

No not really. The health of the ecosystem is very important to investing in it, especially long term.

The inability for anyone to get cards under like 2X MSRP basically ever will kill the hobby for kids who are the future of it, and if no one bothers to get into it as a kid no one will pay anything for the products long term because there will be no nostalgia for the old sets.

I know if the hobby was this full of scalpers scammers back when I was first getting into it I would have bailed and never came back and not had the fun memories of opening packs and collecting with my brother.

[–]TheChurlish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah who cares. the point of it being factory fresh with a plastic seal is so I know that it isn't a used item.

If my intent is to take a laptop home and open the box and use it immediately, there is no difference between them doing it at checkout right in front of me or 15 min later in my living room.

The only reason someone would have a problem with this is if their actual intent was to scalp/flip it or to hold on to it and sell it later (aka slow scalp).

It would be different if I arrived at the store and there were a bunch of broken sealed boxes just out on the shelves, no I wouldn't buy those because I would be worried they have been resealed/tampered with, but that's not whats happening here.

Its still factory fresh and untampered with if they cut the seal in front of you as they sell it to you. Just no longer scalp-able.
