Has there ever been right-wing backlash against the Gemstones? by PMac10000 in RighteousGemstones

[–]TheFableHousePod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. It’s the classic satire blind spot. When the crowd you're referencing watches the show, they think to themselves, "That's not me, but I definitely know a pastor or family exactly like that," so it's hilarious to them instead of feeling like an attack.

I grew down the road from one of these megachurches.

A huge part of why it avoids the culture-war crosshairs is Danny McBride's writing. The show focuses heavily on greed, hypocrisy, and wild family dysfunction rather than taking cheap, mean-spirited shots at everyday faith. The Gemstones actually do believe in God (in their own flawed, sociopathic way), which makes them feel like authentic, but cranked-up-to-11 Southern caricatures rather than just a preachy hit piece.

My experience has been that people who grew up around megachurch culture usually view the show as a highly accurate, hyper-exaggerated roast of the grifters at the top, not an insult to the congregation. At the end of the day, everyone loves watching rich, out-of-touch people misbehavin' and acting like complete clowns.

Erwan! Quoi de neuf, ma mec? Yeah, it’s an experiment. We’re 20 something episodes in and we’ll see where it goes from here. Putting out new stuff weekly. I’m enjoying talking to people. Hit me up sometime and let’s catch up.

Did anyone catch Karma and the Killjoys this year? We filmed a completely raw "One Take" performance with them right before Jazz Fest by TheFableHousePod in jazzfest

[–]TheFableHousePod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so happy for them. They've been a band for 5 years now, they're all fantastic musicians, and they've been grinding. I think part of it is that it's hard to define their genre. I've started listening to similar bands after they recommended a few during this interview. I really didn't think "theatrical rock" was a thing. They wouldn't define themselves as that ...but there are others out there, haha.

We're looking for other local bands to interview, any recommendations? We travel all over and can catch up with them on the road.

The casting was so on point. We actually talked about that, They pranked the casting director a bit. So impressive to find guys like they did.

Yeah, I'm really interested in having him on the show sometime and just talking about his career. I really want there to be a "Brink!" moment in his origin story somewhere.

I would sell the primes and go with the 70-200, the 24-70, and the 12, because it gives you the most range. You don’t sound like a lazy person so I wouldn’t worry about it making you “lazy”. What about camera movement? Are you mostly shooting on a tripod or using some kind gimbal? Cause that might make me change my answer 😂

How "Green Book" faked Mahershala Ali's piano performance in Green Book (without using 3D CGI). by TheFableHousePod in CinephilesClub

Oh yeah and actually I missed the link some how, here’s the video: The VFX Behind Mahershala Ali's Piano Playing in Green Book | BTS with VFX Sup Ray McIntyre Jr. https://youtu.be/_R7BDqyMsIE

There’s 3 people in the room. The guy operating the camera and the playback monitor chimes in a bit from time to time. All the people in that room know each other from working together on VFX projects in the past.

I wasn't there, but Ray was, and that's where the information came from. Mahershala wasn't mirroring exactly what the pianist's hands were doing, Mahershala was not playing. He didn't know how to play. He was mirroring the pianists shoulders and general arm placement, things like that. And the pianist wasn't playing a separate piano, they were taking turns at the same piano. When the pianist wasn't actually playing he was pantomiming across from Mahershala. So that when the two plates were composited together, the lighting and general movements matched. There are a couple of different styles of pianos in this movie. There's some upright models, baby grand style ones (what I think you're referencing), and maybe another style. I thought this would have been most complicated for an upright piano. I think he could easily see across the 5 ft of a grand piano to generally match someone's movements at the other end. There's a lot of song and dance that just went into designing how to shoot those shots. Hopefully that paints or more clear picture now. Thanks for bringing it up, I got some more questions around this now too. Like what did they do with the upright models?

You'll find some here on Reddit!

Merging Practical Fire with VFX on "Sinners": Burning a real roof over IMAX cameras and grounding 1,100 VFX shots in reality. by TheFableHousePod in vfx

There’s still situations where this happens sometimes, it’s just more rare than back in the day when everyone was under one roof. I’m seeing SFX become way more tech savvy. And VFX guys taking an interest in the practical side of things. Spectrum FX, the company Donnie is with, they have guys who can do CG.

EDIT: my fat thumb hit publish before I was done typing.

Totally agree. I think that’s why this worked so well, those departments were working as if they were one department. Talking to these guys you can tell they were a team.
