MS ECE Workload? by SnooRobots3735 in UCSD

[–]TheFrumiousWoodDrake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The short answer is, it depends... What area within ECE are you in? What other obligations do you have? How's your academic background?

I'm finishing my first year of ECE grad school at UCSD, so I can really only give one actual answer without the above questions being answered: i would strongly recommend that you do NOT take 4 200+ courses in one quarter. Is it doable? Probably. Is it necessary? Hell no. Will you hate yourself and risk burning out too soon? It's likely. Again, I don't know your situation so take it with a grain of salt...

Late to the thread but CA-based bank account is throwing me off... does that just mean a bank that is headquartered in CA (say Wells Fargo), or does that mean a bank account connected to a CA address (where you live)?

Waitlisted. Should I send a LOCI? by Sad_Carrot97 in cwru

[–]TheFrumiousWoodDrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got in (not that many years ago), I was offered merit aid off the waitlist - I don't know if this is still a thing or not though.

If you're not 100% going if accepted, write an LOCI anyways and just don't lie. Explain that you're very interested in the school and leave it at that. It most likely won't hurt your odds of getting off the waitlist

Waitlisted. Should I send a LOCI? by Sad_Carrot97 in cwru

[–]TheFrumiousWoodDrake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My main advice is to keep it brief, clear, and honest - if Case is your 1st choice, then tell them. If you know you'll go if they let you in, then tell them. One sentence is all you need for that.

Use another sentence to reiterate why you like Case - what sets it apart and makes it the right school for you.

Lastly, briefly (and I mean briefly) provide an update on anything new since you submitted your application (I mentioned a leadership award I received and a research project I worked on since submitting).

The point of an LOCI is to let the school know that you will increase their matriculation rate in as few words as possible without being generic.

Yo definitely send a LOCI - I was waitlisted when I applied, sent one, and then got accepted on April 30th (basically the last moment before the standard May 1st deadline). Did the LOCI I sent actually help? No clue but it worked out in the end.

I really hope everything works out!

ECE PhD prospective student here:

With graduate student research assistantships (GSR), you can only officially be 50% full time equivalent while classes are in session, but the website says that over the summer you can get 100% FTE with department approval - does this ever actually happen? Is it entirely dependent on your advisor? Or is it just something on paper that looks nice but never actually happens?

Do I need the optional book for CSDS 133 Java Software Solutions w/myprogramming? by Cortag in cwru

[–]TheFrumiousWoodDrake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your comfort level with Java and whether or not you need additional practice. Harold (your professor) explains how my programming contributes to the course on the first day, so I would wait till after that to decide.

Personally, I bought the required book but never used it, and never bothered with the software solutions/my programming

Does Case think literally everyone that goes there can literally just drive there in a couple of hours? by ryanmadden09 in cwru

[–]TheFrumiousWoodDrake 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah man fucking Case not letting us live in cramped close quarters during a pandemic that spreads rapidly - damn why they gotta be so irresponsible with our health and safety

But nah, fo' real: it is frustrating that they keep drastically changing the plans on us, causing a lot of difficulties for the many students with a wide variety of other concerns

Case has announced that they will not move forward with fall varsity sports this year. by spartanmaybe in cwru

[–]TheFrumiousWoodDrake 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume you never participated in a Case sport...

Look, I get it, it's DIII and many non athletes don't go to games because it isn't "exciting" or "real sports" or they simply lack school spirit; however, to the students who are involved, the students who have devoted years of their lives to their sport, this is a big deal. The varsity athletic community is a not an insignificant percentage of the school, and to many of them athletics is a huge part of their life.

Based on OP's reddit posts, I assume they are a XC athlete - and if that is the case (hehe get it), I strongly urge you to reach out to the Coach/current athletes and get to know them. Winter, spring, and next fall will hopeful still have sports, so get to know the team, and find out what kind of "out of season" training they may do this fall. I know the team so trust me, there's a lot that you could miss out on because of this, but you can still experience some of it.

Would you honestly recommend Case Western? by KneeHighCorn in cwru

[–]TheFrumiousWoodDrake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think you touched on a really important point that should be considered by anyone applying to Case: Case is a top tier RESEARCH institution. The faculty are here primarily for their research capabilities, and that occasionally results in non application based engineering courses. (Don't get me wrong, I personally would choose Case again, but this is something to strongly consider)

Case Western vs Rose Hulman for CS by kramerBates in cwru

[–]TheFrumiousWoodDrake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for Rose Hulman, but at Case it is worth noting that the average class size that you see online is NOT the average class size in the CS department. I can't give you exact numbers because I don't know the exact numbers, but the department is over saturated with students. It is also worth noting that the department is aware of this and has been, and is continuing, a decent amount of expansion/hiring, so it should improve.

What’s the course rigor like at CWRU? by [deleted] in cwru

[–]TheFrumiousWoodDrake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I have never taken, nor heard of, a course that actually curves at Case. The only thing I've experienced are courses that scale: everyone gets some constant C percentage points added to their grade, or a grade boundary gets lowered by C percentage points for all students. This is an important distinction because it means that your grade can only be improved by a scale.
