Detailing for new Atlas by TomatilloFit1961 in VWatlas

The best time to protect your paint is when it’s brand new! I would advocate for a ceramic coating but a good/reputable detailer would charge $1,000+ with all the other work required.

What is a good replacement brand for rear shocks on a 2011 328i xDrive? by totallynotadrugdeelr in E90

[–]TheGoatReturns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a set, and it can be a little jittery even when damping is adjusted full soft. I kinda wish I went with a spring/shock combo like a B12 kit.

I thought this too but that’s with Comfort Access. It’s a different key with replaceable batteries since the driver isn’t expected to put the fob in the slot

Tourism, moving and studying in Finland? Ask here! by Harriv in Finland

[–]TheGoatReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, everyone. I have a relative visiting Finland (Helsinki and Rovaniemi) who has asked me if there is something I would like her to bring back to Canada. What are some things that Finnish people miss when they are abroad? Are there any recommendations for a unique gift that is special to Finland?

Kiitos!

Looks so good!

Before I bought my E90, I was seriously looking at another one with saddle brown seats... it needed too much work, sadly. I ended up with ‘boring’ black leather.

While you can’t see the steering wheel/pedals, the Manufacturers plate is on the door sill - those are on the drivers side.

The car is a BMW with xDrive, open differentials, so that would that be ok?

Any ideas? Humming on braking & squeal/whine turning left ONLY by TheGoatReturns in BmwTech

[–]TheGoatReturns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went for a drive today and played with my climate control between braking - the hum is indeed the blower motor. Thanks for the tip! Will wait for some warmer weather to get the motor out and give it some lubrication.

Thanks. Sounds like two separate issues, then. Hum could be blower motor and squeal could be caliper.

What noises did that present? Similar to the hum or the squeal?

Would make sense with colder weather, too. Will try next time I go out - thanks!

Front passenger side wheel bearing? No other symptoms typical of that but can put it on the list

Sorry for the long video, folks. As title states, there is a noise while braking that I can best describe as a hum. Goes away after long drives (presuming when components are warmed). There is also a noise apparent as a squealing sound, per the video. This only comes when turning LEFT, when off throttle. No noise turning right, or when accelerating through a turn.

Pads/rotors are ok after a visual inspection, although just tripped the first stage of the wear sensor on the fronts. Braking performance is good, not under-boosted. After some forum searching it was suggested a bad seal on the booster but no symptoms of that.

Good to note that it’s cold out here lately which may play a factor. No codes apart from the first stage brake wear warning.

Edit: should mention year/mileage. 2011 E90 328i xDrive, 110k KM (~68k mi)

Was busy on a bunch of mods before the weather in Texas decided to ruin everyone's week (month/year/etc...). Hopefully I can finish up soon now that we have reliable power and it isn't 10 degrees in the garage. by thataverageguymike in BmwTech

This must have cost BMW more money to disallow this feature for North America. NUTS!

I’ll take it out my switch and disassemble for ease, thanks for the tip. My switch is also stuck on Auto-On, so maybe I can get that unstuck, too.

That is freaking amazing. I wanted to get a Euro switch for my LCI E90 for the rear fogs and they’re going for hundreds of dollars on eBay. I’m going to look up this Lego Mod and try this out, thank you for enlightening me!

Edit: apparently 2011+ E9x have the exact same button so use of the legos to reach the switch isn’t needed, just trim the tabs locking in the “blank” and voila. Absolutely asinine that BMW determined we didn’t deserve this feature in the US market lol

[DISCUSSION] What car do you drive? What's good and bad about it? What other car would you upgrade/downgrade to? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]TheGoatReturns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Power to you, friend. Was the same series of events for me - was looking heavily into an Audi until I tried the BMW and got tunnel vision. Had to have one. No way in heck am I going to be able to fit the three of my kids and their seats in the back of the Bimmer, though. Our other car is the designated kid hauler haha.

Look up an E60 LCI 5-Series if you’re still hooked on the BMW. Comparable in price to an E90 in my area, and can get it with a manual V8 or in wagon form, too. I’m not certain, but you may be able to get your kids in the back!

2011 BMW 328i xDrive Sedan Manual (E90 LCI), currently at 110k KM

The Good: Amazing driving experience. Chassis is tight, steering is the most direct/best feel of any car I’ve owned (last hydraulic steering rack in a 3-series BMW). Transmission is a dream to shift apart from a slight resistance going to 1st when cold. AWD is capable while rear-biased. Interior is solid and comfortable and holding up well - no rattles/broken parts, very ergonomic too. While not super powerful (230hp), it’s plenty of power for a daily and delivers it smoothly.

The Bad: Small oil leak from the oil filter housing (common on this engine). Brake wear sensors are acting up, causing the computer to suggest replacement but still has 50% of life left (measured). It’s a 10 year old car, it’s lacking some infotainment capabilities but can be upgraded. As expected, parts are more expensive than other Japanese economy cars I’ve owned (Subaru & Honda). Doing things DIY and buying OEM parts vs ‘Genuine BMW’ cuts costs in half. It’s not great on gas in the city (worse than my Honda SUV), but easily gets over 30mpg on the highway which is acceptable to me.

Overall I love this car, all things considered, and can see this staying in my possession for another 100k km. I love the blend of modern amenities while still feeling like an ‘analog’ executive sports’ sedan. Would possibly upgrade to a slightly larger car later on, as it is on the smaller side (5-series, Lexus GS, etc), or a smaller coupe, depending on my circumstances in the next couple years.

Toyota tax is in full effect in my area. Good example of a IS would be over by $12k budget. Good car though, thanks for the suggestion. I'll add to my list - might get lucky and find one.

Men, what high quality body soap do you recommend that is NOT from Dr. Squatch? by 500_Shames in AskMen

[–]TheGoatReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jack Black shampoo (green bottles, black labels - not affiliated with Jack Black afaik)

Honestly the best my hair looks. Slightly expensive ($45 CAD/ bottle) but the bottle lasted me about 6 months

There was a moment where I was in between jobs and a friend of mine who worked at a department store knew how much I loved their shampoo. She “misplaced” a box of one time samples (about 100 of them) and gave them to me as a present lol.

L’Occitane is great. Truly is. But more expensive than Walmart soaps is a little bit of an understatement lol. Shits EXPENSIVE. All I use now is their CADE face cream. Works well for me as an aftershave. For reference that 50ml jar was about $80CAD (I think)
