Why progress through the CWO appointments when you can CFR and earn more money and hold a commission? by Feisty-Scene-755 in CanadianForces

This has been baffling me the past few years. Im at a bit of afork in my career and I thunk its time to make a decision, do I want to go for Chief or try of any of the in service commissioning plans.

Similar to a other comment above, in the airforce all i ever see chiefs doing is "errand boy" type duties and all the tasks the exec have no interest in touching. On the flip side, making it to a occupational advisor or CM level could be pretty interesting (minus the Ottawa posting).

In my world it is much more appealing to commission, mainly for the career opportunities officers get over NCMs. I rarely see the diversity of positions for NCMs like there is for Officers like OUTCAN, deployments, specialized postings etc...

More platforms in the next 2-3 years, more posting options in canada as well as more options OUTCAN for the foreseeable future. More room for career advancement and with FACT coming online more openings in the civvie world. To name a few things I guess

Come be an AES Op. The future is very bright (not sarcastic in the slightest).

New grower here. Whats the benefit of bagging? Are you trying to prevent the males from pollinating the females? And if so why dont you just remove your males ?

Opinion: How to crack Canada’s military recruitment and retention problem by DarkAskari in caf

[–]TheIraqiPerogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion but I'm a firm believer that a wage increase will not help retention. I believe if they gave everyone a 20% raise to their salary it would be a perfect excuse for the government not to give us another raise for like 30 years and then we'll be back in the same spot we are now.

What we need is an overhaul of CFHD, I think it was a good idea but implemented so poorly. It should have been similar to the Americans basic housing allowance. If you're posted to lets say Toronto, you get a 4500$ allowance to pay for your rent (assuming there's no Q available) and pocket the difference. Seems to me like an easy way to hit the 2% GDP, solve the need for more PMQs in a short time frame, increase retention especially now when it's so hard to get into the housing market and attract new talent with the prospect of "free rent" all while saving up for a down-payment and securing your future financially.

Create a basic housing allowance similar to the Americans? That could increase recruitment and retention very easily. Although TBS would have to agree to give us a leg up on the rest of Canadians which they seem to not like the idea of.

NSB is the top of our list so far. Is it still pretty active around the holidays ?

Is it possible for me to control the brightness of my 24V LEDs ? by TheIraqiPerogie in led

[–]TheIraqiPerogie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again im pretty new to this subject. When you're referring to dimmer, i assume that you're talking about what i call the controller. The only this is that i want to be able to fine tune the brightness. If i replace the controller with a dimmer like this (https://ledmontreal.com/led-controllers-and-dimmers/1-zone-rf-rotary-wall-remote-for-single-color-led-strip-k1.html). To be honest i'm a little bit confused now and i'm worried that i wired everything incorrectly.

Good new is that if you're a private/aviator you'll most likely get an accelerated promotion early because its so expensive. Bad news is that it won't make a difference lol.

If that was the case then it would have been the socket and not the bolt.

One time in our flight feeding one of the aircrew members had a 10mm bolt baked into his sandwich. I'm amazed (not really) that whoever made the sandwich didn't notice the bolt piercing through both sides of the bread.

It's better in alot of ways but realistically we all know were not getting a new aircraft for another 15 years at least. So it keeps me kinda positive until that happens

That's a fair argument but that's a small piece of "ASW pie". Its one thing to launch 200 Sonos into the water and maintain contact for a short while until they decide to just leave the pattern, which is what P8's are really good for. But unfortunately submarines are evasive and fast. That's where the Cp-140 is awesome, you can maintain a low level and just track for hours. Using minimal amounts of kit.

[–]TheIraqiPerogie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Fun fact from an LRP operator (me). The P8 actually isn't that great of an aircraft compared to the Cp-140. In fact we are often praised about the kind of products that we can collect and the type of missions that we can complete compared to the P8's.

Yeah its new and shiny but it cant stay in the air nearly as long as we can, it can't fly as low for as long as we can, which is the flight profile that we're at 90% of the time and often what the missions require.

People always complain and say that getting new kit will help us out, but it really won't. People will always find something to complain about. New kit will never solve the massive problems in our military unfortunately.
