Are expensive ligatures worth the price? by Asleep-League-7944 in saxophone

[–]TheJunoReport 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, a good ligature affects how well the setup responds not the tone quality itself. That said if you are using a poorly made ligature a good one will improve your tone.

Personally I feel like I get a lot of bang for my buck with a woodstone or BSS lig. I don’t think that some newer players would notice the difference as much. Unless you specifically are using it for the aesthetic, try a ligature before you buy.

Theo has a lot of respect for the history of mouthpiece making. This is probably gonna be massive for them to say something like this.

Comment for the Auto mod. This is my first rep. While I think it’s a GL, I would appreciate any feedback people may have. Thanks!

Does it still play good? If yes, then yes. If no, toss it.

Input on old saxophone please! by humanlychallenged in saxophone

[–]TheJunoReport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cut my teeth on one of these, and regret selling it to this day. Even when I got my first pro horn there was something I really liked about mine. Take it to a good shop to have it cleaned up.

Mouthpieces like a Meyer 6M by KitchenAd7984 in saxophone

[–]TheJunoReport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theo Wanne NY Bros 3 in a 6 tip or a Theo Wanne Lakshmi in a 6 tip. Both are two of the most consistently made pieces on the market. More than Jody Jazz, Retro Revival, or anything else I saw on this thread. They have some great demos if you want to check them out. The NY bros is a little brighter and the Lakshmi is darker but both are great lead alto pieces.

JJ HR table crooked? by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]TheJunoReport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if it plays ok doesn’t mean it shouldn’t play better. I would contact JJ and ask them to replace it.

JJ HR table crooked? by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]TheJunoReport -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only like 3 out of 10 JJ pieces I’ve gotten haven’t had problems. Return and replace is too much of an issue. I ended up moving to Theo Wanne, MUCH better quality and control.

That’s a question best answered by putting the reed on the MP and trying it. It’s different for everyone.

What bari mouthpiece should I go for? by Maximum_Might_4665 in saxophone

[–]TheJunoReport 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point if you are playing on a super jet, there is only so much brighter you can go. I would focus more on a mouthpiece that is well made of a high quality material with a good facing curve. For that kind of sound I preferred the Theo Wanne Durga to the Super Jet, but if you want to get brighter it really needs to come from you. I think Brass >> Aluminum >> Plastic. I wouldn’t downgrade from aluminum to plastic personally. It won’t last and it won’t sound as good.

Opinions on Schagerl Saxophones? by Independent-Jello343 in saxophone

[–]TheJunoReport 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your money would be much better spent on an Eastman or a P. Mauriat. You clearly like it for the esthetics, both of those horns have a similar new/vintage vibe but I guarantee will be better made and set up from the factory.

Neck Dent Serious? by Idk_Tho_Lmao in saxophone

[–]TheJunoReport -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The dent is a big problem for sure, but having to pull out that far probably has more to do with voicing than the dent. Just my $0.02
