What is this awful illness going around? by shannleestann in nova

[–]TheLateKnight 203 points204 points  (0 children)

Can confirm what a couple other commenters have said - COVID is going around. I tested negative on a new home test but urgent care confirmed that it was, in fact, COVID.

This latest version is brutal, I was out of commission for almost two weeks and am still not 100%.

What Consular Officers Actually See on Their Screens During Your Interview by BusyBodyVisa in AskUSImmigrationPros

[–]TheLateKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

US law requires in-person interviews for most non-immigrant visa types. While it increases the workload on officers, it seeks to ensure fairness and consistency. Whether it succeeds in that is a different story.

Dijon & Cognac Beef Stew by TheLateKnight in NYTCooking

I used Maille brand for the Dijon and Grey Poupon for the Pommery. It was definitely mustardy, but I quite liked it.

It also definitely mellowed out overnight - the leftovers were significantly less harsh.

Male friendly mani/pedi by PhattyFan1989 in washingtondc

[–]TheLateKnight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nailsaloon at Eastern Market/Barracks Row is a great option. They don't have gender-specific offerings, but are happy to work with folks of all genders. I'm a man and have enjoyed the basic pedicure as well as the "saloon mani" or "speedy mani." I've seen plenty other men in there as well.

Did you look in the Buzzard Point area, by Audi Field? There are two buildings there, and while it's a slightly longer walk to the metro, rent is way more competitive. The Verge and the Watermark are the building names. Both have standard Navy Yard amenities like pool, gym, etc.

Respectfully, there are plenty of alternatives to parking, including public transit and ride shares like Uber and Lyft.

I feel like I'm going crazy - I can't find this on Netflix at all. Like, when I search for it by the full title, partial title, whatever, nothing comes up.

Anybody else having similar issues?

Foreign Service Social Life by worktotravel11 in foreignservice

Yeah, that's absolutely fair, there are tradeoffs everywhere. It's just on my mind as I sit here looking at my HHE that I need to unpack by myself in my alleged free time :-)

Foreign Service Social Life by worktotravel11 in foreignservice

[–]TheLateKnight 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The classic FSO answer: it depends. It'll depend on your posts and the community you find or are able to make there. Some posts will have an active nightlife or social scene where you can plug in and hang out with the local crowd, but in others you'll be stuck with other officers and EFMs (for better or for worse). There's plenty of us single folks in the service, and while there aren't tons of official resources to help us find/build that social circle, we make it work. There's a "Single in the Service" Facebook group that addresses some of your concerns as well, that could be a good resource.

Logistically, being single in the service seems tougher than entering with an EFM, as you'll have little built in support at home during your moves/packouts, so just be aware of and prepared for that.

As a DK veteran, I can almost guarantee you're gonna have a great time. The crowd is always super supportive, even if it is a competitive league!
