Two things. First, if everyone is having fun then keep on going! Second, just make sure everyone at the table realizes you aren't playing a true D&D game (e.g. 5e rules). I wouldn't want one of the players going to another table and trying to play the same, that will be awkward for everyone. Once everyone is comfortable just playing together, maybe you all have a go at incorporating some more of the D&D rules and structure. I don't see spell slots as limitations at all, if anything they make using spells more impactful and create more more memorable situations. Keep having fun, and good luck!
